Chinese smartphone makers have increased their dominance over the Indian market in Q1 2019. Counterpoint research report reveals that four of the top five smartphone companies in India are Chinese and they have captured a solid 66% market share in the previous quarter of the year.

Xiaomi’s market share dropped slightly from 31% in Q1 2018 to 29% in Q1 2019, while Vivo saw a significant rise in its market share during the same period. It went up from just 6% last year to a staggering 12% in the first quarter of this year. Even Realme saw a quick rise in its market share, capturing a decent 7% share of this highly competitive market. OPPO’s market share increased slightly to 7%.

Samsung’s smartphone shipment market share dropped slightly to 23% in the previous quarter, down by 3% YoY. However, the company gained some moment in the feature phone market with an increase from 10% in Q1 2018, to 15% in Q1 2019. Jio still dominates the feature phone segment with 30% market share. The report further notes that the company’s Galaxy S10 series is doing well in the country, driving up its Average Selling Price (ASP) in the region.

Other brands which managed to do well in the Indian market include ASUS, especially in the budget segment, thanks to its Zenfone series. Tecno, and Nokia HMD are doing well too. The rise in the market share of Chinese brands has naturally led to the decline of the Indian brand shipments. The previous quarter recorded the lowest ever market share of shipments from local Indian brands.

Another important point mentioned in the report was that Samsung has surpassed OnePlusin Q1 2019 to become the number one smartphone maker in the premium segment. Given that OnePlus 7 Pro is slated to release on May 14, we could see some changes in this particular segment in the coming quarters.

Finally, most smartphone companies are making a strong push into retail sales. Xiaomi, OnePlus, and even Realme benefitted from an increased focus on brick and mortar stores. So, we could expect the strategy to continue in the coming quarters.

Unlike Chinese whose love for vanity drove they to buy 1/3 world's luxury goods, Indians are very price sensitive and value oriented. "Made in China" is simply irresistible despite countless calls for boycott "Made in China".

Yup. No Indians selling their kidneys for iPhone.
Also India per capita is 2000 usd while China is 10000 usd. So for imported items this is telling.

vivo etc offer value that's the reason for their increase in market share. Xaomi is shyte and will eventually come down further.
As affluence rise and folks get more aware of options, there will b real battle.
Let me add here, people who are more aware and less price conscious, deliberately prefer Samsung to any other Chinese brand. I only hope that LG ups their game

I know. They sell their kidneys for something more practical. Yo are right, India's per capital GDP is 1/5 of China's, but it doesn't have to be that way. You could have been the one on top, had you have the right mix.

Samsung seems to be losing ground in India year on year, could be another Nokia in the future.

Not likely. Nokia failed because of horribly incompetent leadership. Nokia put all their eggs in one basket of Microsoft windows. When windows failed so did Nokia.

Samsung on the other hand displayed sensibility and invested in android along with their in house operating system, so while their own operation system failed they kept their mobile business alive due to investment in Android.

Recently Samsung has also upped their game in India. They have actively started competing with Mi and the likes in offering similar offerings in similar price bracket. It also has a better goodwill in india as compared to chinese brands. It won't die anytime soon.

Kidney lasts a lifetime, iPhone last a couple years max, may be 3 if you are that desperate without means. These are silly arguments though. What we do know is nothing lasts forever, whether its a phone, or an empire or a misrule. Everything changes with time.

Why no Huawei? Thought their honor budget smartphone doing very well in India?

I was surprised as well, I thought Honor would do very well in India. And the Kirin 710 is a very efficient/powerful chipset for budget phones.
