Chinese Scientists Use Human Brain Gene to Engineer Smarter Monkeys

(Yicai Global) April 16 -- Chinese scientists have implanted human brain genes into monkeys for the first time in an attempt to understand what causes human intelligence.

Scientists inserted the gene of MCPH1, which has been linked to brain development, into 11 monkey embryos via a virus that carried the gene into the primates' brains, Beijing's National Science Review reported.

Six of the monkeys died while the study showed that the remaining five performed better in short-term memory tests.

The research team believes that such basic research will help us understand the etiology of autism and other brain development diseases and provide effective clues for potential treatment options in the long run, Caixin reported.

The Western community of scientists has questioned the ethics of the research. "The use of transgenic monkeys to study human genes linked to brain evolution is a very risky road to take," James Sikela, a geneticist at the University of Colorado, told the MIT Technology Review, adding his concerns about more radical modifications in future.

Chinese researchers develop new method to repair meniscus

(Xinhua) 10:16, April 17, 2019

BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese researchers have used a new tissue engineering method to build artificial meniscus that better mimic native ones.

The meniscus is a fibrocartilage structure within the knee joint that helps reduce friction during joint movement. Once damaged, it may increase the risk of osteoarthritis, and the meniscus has a limited ability to heal itself.

Currently used artificial materials for meniscal tissue repair have limitations as they can not construct the native meniscus' anisotropic structure with different properties from the inner to the outer zone. Therefore, joint degeneration may occur after implantation.

Researchers from the Peking University Third Hospital, Beihang University and other institutes have developed a new tissue engineering method to construct meniscus with the native anisotropic structure.

They used a biomimetic 3D printed poly-seeded scaffold with mesenchymal stem cells and applied biomechanical stimulation and growth factor treatment to generate tissues that mimic the native knee meniscus.

The engineered meniscus demonstrated cartilage protection when implanted into the knees of rabbits.

According to Jiang Dong, one of the researchers, the structure and mechanical strength of the meniscus they constructed are very close to native ones, which will effectively prevent the articular cartilage degeneration.

"It is interdisciplinary research that combines medical science and engineering and has a good perspective in future clinical application for patients with meniscus injuries," Jiang said.

The research was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

What would happen if these monkeys receive the brain gene from a human who has a higher IQ than 100, the average human IQ? A money who is smarter than human? :o:

So Chinese scientist bred a smarter breed of Vietnamese?

It does not make sense to make smarter monkeys. Rather, probably, the aim is to have smarter human species after proving the procedure on monkeys.

There are lots of human beings that are in dire need of such treatment. :D

The intent is to ascertain the cause of intelligence, so it seems like the Party is trying to make a more compliant Chinese citizenry. Viet Nam is not a threat to the Party, the Chinese citizenry is. :enjoy:
