A mysterious streak of light burst across the sky late Wednesday near California – causing a frenzy on social media as witnesses speculated a meteor strike or alien invasion.
That encapsulating trail of light turned out to be the remnants of a Chinese CZ-7 rocket that re-entered the atmosphere over Northern America at around 11:36 p.m. Central time, the U.S. Strategic Command confirmed.
As the fireball burst through the night sky, onlookers quickly lit up social media with their own theories and photos and videos of the occurrence as sightings were reported in Nevada, Utah and California.
“I’m gunna assume this is aliens cuz Ive never seen anything this pretty!” Twitter user Connor Johnson under the handle @24cdawg tweeted along with a video of the blast of light.
Twitter user @dtsaltlakecity tweeted, “Most incredible meteor just slowly passed over Salt Lake City.”
“Whatever just burned up in the atmosphere was just epic. Was like a big meteor that broke up while cascading across the sky! #meteorshower,” tweeted @KristinaV5.
Some were wary over the confirmation that it was in fact a Chinese rocket.
“A lot of rockets flying around lately hmm I wonder whats really going on,” Facebook user Andrew Neff posted.
Facebook user George K. Howsepian posted, “If that’s all it was, why have we never seen anything like it before?…I thought at first it was a skyrocket and was lookin’ for it to explode but it just kept on flyin’. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Utah resident Holley Jan Larsen posted to her Facebook page that she was “kinda hoping for aliens” after the light was revealed to be a rocket.
U.S. Strategic Command spokeswoman Julie Ziegenhorn wouldn’t say if the rocket ever posed danger to people, but added that the command often sees rocket re-entries.
Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., told the Los Angeles Times that the Chinese rocket launched on June 25.
It re-entered the atmosphere after about a month in low orbit and was likely traveling about 18,000 mph, he said.
“Something this big enters in an uncontrolled way probably once a month,” McDowell told the LA Times, but later clarified that it happens more like once per year.
