Chinese tourists who sang the national anthem in anger during a flight delay in Thailand were humiliating their own country, according to an online commentary put out on Monday by state news agency Xinhua.
“People humiliate not only themselves by singing the national anthem when dealing with disputes abroad … they also humiliate the country they are associated with,” the commentary said.
Faced with a 10-hour flight delay, dozens of mainland tourists vented their anger by bursting into song in an airport departure hall in Bangkok on Friday.
The flight was scheduled to take off from Don Mueang International Airport at 5pm but was delayed until 3am the next day, Shanghai-based news portal Thepaper.cn reported.
“They were due to flight out on Orient Thai Airlines, but the fight was delayed and the [Chinese] tourists were quite discontented,” an airport worker was quoted as saying.
“Thirty-three of the passengers refused to leave [the departure hall] after the others boarded.”
The commentary said Chinese tourists were self-confident abroad now because they had more money to spend.
“Having confidence is one thing, being arrogant is another,” the commentary said.
Tourists should observe host countries’ laws and norms and safeguard their legitimate rights in accordance with local regulations, it said. When treated unfairly, tourists should collect evidence and complain through official channels.
“Not every self-willed act can be [legitimised] in the name of one’s country,” the commentary said. “Countrymen need to earn the respect of others by … being more forgiving and polite.”
