In stark contrast, a Chinese envoy to the UN in Geneva last year had to express Beijing’s dissatisfaction over the international community’s sluggish response in treating Xinjiang violence as “terrorism”.
Meanwhile, the editorial in the Chinese state-run Global Times on Friday questioned the western narrative on the attack as revolving around “press freedom”.

The Xinjiang conflict is an ongoing separatist struggle in the PRC far-west province of Xinjian. A group of Uyghur separatists claim that the region, which they refer to as East Turkestan, is not a part of China, but that the Soviet supported Second East Turkestan Republic was incorporated by the PRC in 1949 and has since been under Chinese occupation. The separatist movement is led by Turkic Islamist militant organizations, most notably the East Turkestan independence movement, against the national government in Beijing.
