Chinese Hambantota Port project enters second phase

Local news sources report that the second phase of the Sri Lankan Hambantota Port project is set to begin next month as the last strecth of dredging there approaches completion.

Sri Lanka Port Authority Southern Port Development's Chief Engineer Agil Hewageegana said work on the port is progressing and is well ahead of schedule.

Around 40,000 cubic metres have to be dredged and we hope to complete work by early April”, Hewageegana said.

“Currently dredges are being fixed to commence work in the Karagam lagoon. Dredging will commence in two weeks time”, the Chief Engineer said.

The project is being funded by the China Exim Bank and has been contracted by the China Harbour Engineering Company, with the first phase expected to be completed by April.

The first phase costing US$361 million, includes the completion of four new berths with the second an additional five, with the third and fourth stages still under evaluation by the SLPA.
