Chinese hackers target India's data on Naxals

A joint investigation report by University of Toronto and Indian government has exposed China's brazen hacking of New Delhi's military secrets. Headlines Today has secured documents showing how the hackers stole secret information regarding security assessment on Maoists.

The documents were the outcome of a joint probe by cyber investigators from the University of Toronto and the Indian government. The report details how Chinese hackers accessed secret information from the computer of a member of the National Security Council secretariat.

Ron Deibert, the director of Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto, said, "We found out that Indian government computers were targeted."

The investigators ex-filtrated at least 14 documents from the targeted computer networks. These documents were extremely sensitive from the national security perspective.

Secrets compromised
The targeted documents included an encrypted diplomatic correspondence, two documents classified as 'secret' and containing sensitive information on battling Naxalites, six documents marked as 'restricted' and five as 'confidential'.

A document of National Security Council with information on India's security situation in Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura was also hacked.

The report also reveals that the hackers stole sensitive military information on Indian missile projects. The targeted military projects included Pechora Missile System (an anti-aircraft surface-to-air missile system), Iron Dome Missile System (a mobile missile defence system, Ratzlav-Katz 2010, Project Shakti (an artillery combat command and control system) and Frontier India 2009.

These shocking revelations raise several questions on the intentions of these cyber attackers. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of these attacks being politically and strategically motivated.
