Chinese telecom service providers will spend close to $44 billion by 2020 to achieve nationwide 5G mobile communications coverage, reports Nikkei Asian Review.

The said development could boost the chances of Chinese technology and services in becoming the de facto global standards.

The 5G technology will bring much faster data speeds than those offered by the 4G standard, and this telecommunications protocol also will be the first developed with the internet of things (IoT) in mind. Hundreds of billions of devices are expected to exchange data as the internet of things takes hold, and mobile networks likely will serve as a key conduit.

China Mobile Communications, which boasts over 800 million subscribers, will develop 5G-related technologies with more than 40 global companies. China Mobile has ended basic technology development and plans to begin field trials of 5G technology this year, aiming to commercialize services in select areas in 2018 and start upgrading over 1 million 4G base stations to handle the new standard in the following year. The company aims to spread 5G services nationwide in 2020.

China is the world’s No. 1 mobile phone market, with service subscribers exceeding 1.3 billion. The country also stands at the cutting edge of related services such as electronic funds settlement, as well as ride-hailing services.

The creation of 5G networks likely will accelerate the development of new services, as it will enable wireless linking of various home appliances via the internet. Businesses should be able to centrally control multiple factory robots more easily and improve maintenance of machinery by using big-data analysis to spot potential breakdowns.

The next-generation technology also likely will help improve the performance of self-driving vehicles, such as by letting cars exchange data among each other and avert a collision.

Huawei compete with global peers to set 5G standard
(People's Daily Online) 16:37, February 23, 2017

FOREIGN201702231640000361319392970.png

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has carried out the world’s first field test of fifth-generation cellular network (5G) technology using a 3.5 GHz band, which is expected to become the global 5G standard. Huawei also tested the connection between instrument and chip manufacturers, Thepaper.cn reported.

Huawei’s announcement comes after Qualcomm, an American competitor, successfully tested its 5G connection on Feb. 21. The latter's connection is based on New Radio (NR) work in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), an international mobile telecommunications standards organization.

According to 3GPP’s official website, the standards for 5G technology will be set this year. Global telecom giants including Qualcomm, Huawei and Ericsson have all been carrying out research and tests of the new technology, competing for a leading role in setting those standards.

“The international community has reached a consensus that a unified 5G standard should be established. Currently, all the telecom giants have offered their technological patents to 3GPP, hoping that their standards will be the ones adopted,” an anonymous expert told Thepaper.cn, adding that the competition to set the 5G standards could affect national interests.

Chinese companies have gained ground in the 5G battle, where the U.S. and EU have long been leaders. During the No.87 RAN1 meeting held by 3GPP in 2016, the polar code, created by Chinese companies, was defined by participants from around the world as the control channel encoding scheme for the application of 5G in eMBB (enhanced mobile broadband) scenarios.

MWC17: ZTE releases full range of 5G pre-commercial base stations
By IoT - Internet of Things
February 26, 2017

ZTE Corporation is releasing a full range of 5G mmWave and Sub6GHz pre-commercial base stations, and will be demonstrating the 50 Gbps peak rate of a 5G mmWave base station at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona. This release allows operators to deploy these products ahead of time and seize opportunities in the 5G era so that consumers can enjoy the 5G ultimate rate ahead of time.

At MWC, ZTE’s full range of 5G mmWave and Sub6GHz pre-commercial products showcased support for 3rd Generation Partnership Projects (3GPP) 5G new radio (NR) new air interfaces and mainstream 5G frequency bands in the industry. The range uses massive multiple input, multiple output (MIMO), Beam Tracking, beamforming and other key 5G technologies, meeting the 5G pre-commercial deployment requirements in various scenarios. 5G Sub6GHz base stations are the smallest and lightest base stations with the industry’s highest level of integration, and their data throughput can reach 10 Gbps. ZTE, and its strategic partner China Mobile, also carried out a joint demonstration of the 5G mmWave pre-commercial base station.

In 2016, ZTE became the world’s first vendor to verify the key technologies in the 5G mmWave and Sub6GHz fields and successfully completed 5G mmWave field tests. With outstanding performance, ZTE took the lead and passed all the tests in the first phase of China’s 5G test. ZTE has successfully completed 5G single-point technology and prototype verification and has now entered the 5G solution verification and product research and development (R&D) phase. The release of the full range of 5G mmWave and Sub6GHz base stations has paved the way for subsequent 5G pre-commercial tests and deployment.

As one of the key 5G technologies, Massive MIMO plays a vital role in improving frequency efficiency and air interface bandwidth. In June 2014, ZTE became the world’s first vendor to put forward the innovative Pre5G concept in the 4G era and put Massive MIMO into commercial use ahead of time, meeting customers’ increasing data requirements and allowing a smooth evolution into the 5G era. So far, ZTE’s Pre5G Massive MIMO has been widely deployed with China Mobile, Softbank (in Japan) and in other global high-end markets.

Widely recognised by operators and the industry, Massive MIMO is already used in 5G scenarios in existing mobile networks. It can solve technology and application problems caused during the commercial operation process, and will greatly accelerate the maturity of core 5G technologies and effectively shorten the period of product verification and large-scale commercial use. ZTE has applied for hundreds of technical patents, and contributed to many valuable proposals from standards organisations in regards to this technology process based on massive data collected from actual scenarios.

Zhang Jianguo, SVP of ZTE, said: “ZTE will continue its innovation in the 5G field to meet the product and service needs of customers. ZTE will occupy a place in the world’s first 5G commercial market and lay a solid foundation for the future Internet of Things (IoT).”
