Chinese diplomat evokes history in a bid to boost ties with India

Chinese ambassador to India Le Yucheng on Tuesday said his country was hoping to draw lessons from history, valuing peace and working with India and other nations for a better future.
During a speech in New Delhi ahead of the 70th anniversary of China marking its victory in World War II next month, Le stressed the need to “work for a new world order that is more equitable and just”.
The comments come as India and China are trying to work out a solution to a six-decade-old boundary dispute following the 1962 war. It also comes as the countries are trying to resolve many other irritants in bilateral ties like China’s economic and strategic support to Pakistan and a yawning trade deficit.
The remarks also come against the backdrop of China being locked in maritime disputes with many of its neighbours like Japan, the Phillipines and Vietnam, while India has been stengthening its ties with these countries to balance the rise of an assertive China.
China is to mark the 70th anniversary of the victory in World War II and has invited militaries of other countries to participate in a parade at Tiananmen Square in Beijing on 3 September. India has been invited to take part in the event but has not indicated the level of its participation as yet. In May, President Pranab Mukherjee had led a delegation and an Indian army contingent had taken part in the Victory Day celebrations.
Japan signed the formal surrender on 2 September 1945, and China celebrated its victory the following day.
Recalling the incidents during the war, Le said that China was joined by many countries including India in the fight against Japanese forces in Asia.
“Among all the countries and peoples, the Chinese people will not forget the Indian medical team who came to China in the most difficult days of the struggle to care for the wounded and save lives,” Le said, recalling that Mahatma Gandhi and poet Rabindranath Tagore had given their moral support to the Chinese during World War II.
“The collective victory marked a major turning point in the history of the world. Together, we not only defeated the fascists, but also dealt a heavy blow to hegemony and broke the foundation of colonialism. Together, we brought about an awakening in the colonial and semi-colonial countries and ushered in a new wave of independence movement around the globe…
“The world will not forget ‘Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai’, as we sympathized with and supported each other’s liberalization and independence efforts in a kinship spirit. India’s independence movement was widely reported in China and aroused strong support. The world will not forget that India was among the first group of countries to recognize new China and to call for the restoration of China’s lawful seat in the United Nations.”
With 70 years having passed since the end of the war, “the world has seen more than its fair share of ups and downs and is far from being peaceful and tra-nquil. Traditional and non-traditional security threats are intertwined, and solutions to many challenges still elude us”, Le said.
“We must build a community of common destiny with shared interests, as all countries are pa-ssengers on the same boat in this globalized era, and no one is immune to the new challenges.
“History has witnessed the friendly exchanges between China and India, two ancient civilizations living next door to each other, over the millennium. And history calls upon us to build on this friendship, boost the momentum of better-than-ever relations, and create a new splendour in the duet of the dra-gon and the elephant,” he added, referring to metaphors commonly used for China and India
