Basically a cargo ship named Lecong operated by Cosco is being attack by pirates in the northern part of the Indian Ocean. The crew are fighting off pirate with high-pressured water and flash grenades. All its 26 crew members are Chinese and one of them was injured during fights with the pirates.

PLAN is sending an unspecified warship from its mission in the Gulf of Aden to rescue. The warship should arrive at Beijing Time 10AM tomorrow (20th).

Hope they are in time, it seems that the pirates would have taken over before the PLAN warship arrives.

.
HOpe PLAN will reach there on time and kick the pirates out...

Normally countries help each other at such times.

I am wondering if there was any warship belonging to any other country nearby, especially Indian ones.

OR did PLAN decide to take the matter in its own hands ?

The report says Chinese search and rescue center has requested help from EU navies. I'm not sure if they had asked for help from the Indian Navy. Although the attack is in the Indian ocean I don't think it's close to the Indian coast.

Lot many navies operate their warships in that region, one of them will surely reach there fast.

A big problem the Chinese vessels have is the shortage of fluent English speakers on board. When I was in the Merchant Marine, communicating with only-Chinese manned vessels was really difficult due to this reason, this also could be a reason they only contacted Chinese rescuers.

That is one reason albeit a very basic one. Another reason could be that Chinese flagged ships may be instructed to contact PLAN warships in case of an emergency.
In any case, co-ordination in the International Corridor is carried out by UKMTO which liases with all warships in the area. While it indeed an International Operation, co-ordination and control still leaves a lot to be desired. Finally, prevention of boarding (and control) by the pirates is the only workable solution. After a ship is taken over, rescue is rather difficult; because of the risk of collateral damage.

Piracy has become increasingly lucrative in that region. Ransom payouts (probably) are upwards of USD 350 million.

At this rate, the pirates may even consider buying some old/scrap gunboats or even a submarine !!

where is the Indian navy they are usually quick to respond threats in indian ocean..or there isn't a joint CT treaty between India and China??

Nomenclature has said that the attack though in Indian Ocean seems to be away from the Indian Coastal line. May be that is the reason and also the ship must have contacted only Chinese ships over the radio?? Let us see what pans out

China sends warship to help veseel attacked by pirates

A warship will arrive Saturday morning to help a Chinese ship attacked by pirates in the northern Indian Ocean, the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC) said Friday.

Twenty-six Chinese crew aboard the Lecong, belonging to COSCO Shipping Co Ltd, had fought off the pirates, said Zhai Jiugang, director of the CMSRC chief duty room.

The center received a call for help at 9:30 pm Thursday, Zhai said.

The center dispatched a warship from escort duty in the Gulf of Aden at 9:45 pm Thursday. It was expected to meet with the Lecong at 10:20 am Saturday.

One of the 26 crew members was injured in the fight, Zhai said.

Vessels should pay more attention to safety as the area had reported a series of pirate attacks recently, Zhai warned.

India and China should give Mauritius some free attack boats so we can handle the situation being close to africa.

Hi,Sri Lankan. Question for you.
Was that Chinese ship which was saved by SLN also under attack by pirates?

Good that SLN ships are on the way now. Its quite a way from Sri Lanka. Hope they get there in time.
