Chinese astronauts enter space lab after successful docking.
CHINA'S first female astronaut and two male crewmates entered the orbiting Tiangong-1 space lab module at about 5pm today after the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft docked with the module.
Flight leader Jing Haipeng, 46, firstly entered the bus-sized space module after opening three cabin doors between the spacecraft and the module
He was followed by Liu Wang, 43, who helped Jing monitor the air condition and pressure inside the module.
Woman astronaut Liu Yang, a 34-year-old air force pilot, was the last to enter the space lab after reporting to the ground control headquarters in Beijing. She stumbled and floated in the gravity-free cabin and took some time to adapt to the new environment.
After entering the cabin, the three astronauts began to adjust various machines inside. The astronauts wore thinner outfits to move easily inside a narrow space about the size of a bus.
They will live in the module for about 10 days, conduct medical tests on the effects of weightlessness on the human body, and perform other scientific and engineering tasks on Tiangong-1, which was put into orbit last September.
Two astronauts will live and work inside the module to test its life-support systems while the third will remain in the capsule to deal with any emergency.
The module has separate "bedrooms" for male and female astronauts. They can attach their sleeping bags in any position inside the gravity-free module.
Fitness equipment such as bicycle ergo meter, chest developer and neuromuscular electrical stimulator will help astronauts reduce the effects of weightlessness and maintain their cardiac and muscular functions.
