(Yicai Global) Jan. 20 -- Chinese people are the most optimistic among Asians about when the coronavirus pandemic will come to an end, the findings of a new survey by international financial services provider Manulife Financial showed.

Almost two-thirds of Chinese respondents said they thought the pandemic would be over within a year, according to the Manulife Asia Care Survey, which covered eight markets. Regionwide, nearly half said Covid-19 would last another year or more.

The report, released today, was based on a survey carried out last November of over 8,276 people aged 25 to 60 in the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam, with 1,027 respondents from the Chinese mainland.

Among Chinese people, 59 percent have savings that will last more than a year in the event of loss of income, much higher than the 36 percent across the region.

Twenty-eight percent of Chinese people expressed concern that the country’s economy will take a long time to recover, while 17 percent said they worry about diminishing personal wealth, and 15 percent were concerned that they and their families would not be able to afford high medical costs.

Chinese respondents also have more confidence in their health, with 74 percent saying they are in excellent physical condition, and 72 percent saying they have good mental health, well above the Asian average of 66 percent and 64 percent, respectively. Cancer, heart disease and mental health issues like burnout, depression and anxiety are among the top health concerns for Chinese..

Sixty-four percent of Chinese respondents said that retirement planning has become more important for them since Covid-19 started, up 11 percentage points from the previous survey. The figure shows that awareness among Chinese about life after work has been continuously growing.

Insurance, one of the main tools for retirement planning, is gaining greater favor, with 77 percent of Chinese recognizing its importance and 91 percent saying they intend to buy cover in the next 12 months. Also, 34 percent viewed getting insurance as an effective risk mitigator, far above the regional average of 14 percent.

“It is encouraging to see that Chinese consumers are increasingly proactive in managing their physical and mental health, as well as improving their financial planning since the outbreak of Covid-19,” Manulife-Sinochem Chief Executive Officer Kai Zhang said.

“Based on the findings from this regular survey, we are able to develop a more dynamic and broader view of consumer trends in lifestyle, risk protection and financial planning,” she said.

Here in the US, wearing a mask & getting a vaccine shot can be very political. 858k deaths so far and people still want to slam the constitutional book at you when it has been mandated.

In China, mask is not politicalized at all. I got 100 medical masks for 10 RMB, which is 1.6 dollars.
