There may be many critics of China, but I have to say China's involvement in Sri Lanka has been for the benefit of the country, both politically and economically. India is being held hostage by Tamil Nadu vis a vis its relations with Sri Lanka. Thus, breaking out of India's stranglehold on the island has been something in Sri Lanka's interests, and this would not have been possible without China's support and growing influence on the world stage. China's diplomatic and military support to Sri Lanka in defeating the LTTE will never be forgotten, and today Sri Lankans live without fear of bomb blasts, suicide bombers, child soldiers and ambulance sirens blaring day in and day out. Others sitting in their ivory towers may not understand what a change the end of war has brought to Sri Lanka, but the benefits have been real and tangible.
Therefore, it is in Sri Lanka's interests to support China's rise and work in partnership with China to develop the island (this is already happening at a rapid pace). It's a shame India is kow towing to the backward cretins running Tamil Nadu and placing its relationship with Sri Lanka - which could be the best it would have in its immediate neighbourhood - at risk, and then having the temerity to blame China. Who in their right mind would place their foreign policy under the guidance of uneducated ex film stars from one of the country's most backward states? One cannot blame the Chinese for extending their hand of friendship to Sri Lanka under the circumstances.
谢谢你,中国!
