The fighting in Afghanistan was a major reason for the callapse, firstly it was draining the economy and secondly, people wanted change. The people also got tired of the system, many Russians domonstarated and pushed for a reform.
You should really Gorby's books and learn why the USSR collapse. The US was in SE Asia and we did not collapse.

Actually economic growth and war are related. Countries involved in well managed conflicts tend to see a spurt in their economic growth. Case in point- Indian economy immediately after Kargil war. Markets went crazy!

I mentioned only two reasons for the callapse, i'm sure there is more. Most westers sources agree that the fighting in Afghanistan had a major role in the Soviet Union's collapse. One reason why the US didn't calapse was because it's economy was stronger and hippies and their 'flowerpower' movement probably didn't have much of an impact on the US government, in contrast Russian politicians supported Russian as an indipendent state.

USSP collapsed only because they neglectted the economic development and put all the attention on the arms race,as simple as this

Remember...The goal is to win without fighting. The US won the Cold War because the West forced the Soviets to fight itself.

is that how U.S plan to eradicate each so-call "Axis of evil"? is it because most of your allies tired of being embroiled in another meaningless war and wished U.S could fight itself?please,U.S didn't choise the "without fighting" way to end the cold war,U.S can't afford a fight with russia even right now.let's hope U.S can stick to her goal and try not to kill 1million people for another imaginary bomb

using internal dissidents to bring down the soviet union which coincided with the rise of a weak politician Gorbachev. Very smart of the US politicians.

And just remember what the mongols were 90 years after their conquest of china: overthrown, then their capital burned, then a tribute state that lived under the Ming Dynasty boot for 200 years. Then the Qing Dynasty for another 300. Then half of them under the Soviets and half under us for 90 years. Now they are one of the poorest nations on earth.

If the Americans want to be remembered as the next Mongols then I have nothing more to say other than good luck

what does sky news in Britain rank?

Not as main stream because it is not part of the free TV package in the UK -- BBC, ITV news, Channel 4 are the main TV news sources. I also noticed that sky news in the UK doesn't come across as pro-right as fox, it almost gives a feel of having less formality as BBC and when a significant news breaks out it provides more (but less significant) details, which can be quite interesting to watch. The Fox presenters in the US are by far in a league of their own...
