China's first-tier cities remain attractive to overseas returnees: survey

(Xinhua) 15:57, October 15, 2017

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- A recent survey showed overseas-educated Chinese still prefer to work in China's first-tier cities after returning to the country.

About 18.6 percent of respondents returning from overseas chose to work in Beijing, followed by Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen with 15.6 percent, 13.4 percent and 12 percent respectively, according to the survey jointly released by China's major job search websites and a study abroad agency.

Emerging cities such as Hangzhou, Wuhan, Nanjing, Chengdu and Suzhou are also popular among returned Chinese looking to find work.

Jobs in finance, IT, telecommunication, electronics and internet sectors as well as in education, are the top choices for returnees, while internet, finance, real estate, education and training, and machinery manufacturing sectors have stronger demand for returnees, according to the survey.

Nearly 50 percent of respondents have done some form of career planning before studying abroad or during their study abroad, the survey said.

China is currently in the middle of its biggest ever influx of returning overseas-educated graduates.

According to another survey released on Aug. 30 by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), a major Chinese think tank, more than 2.65 million Chinese who studied overseas had returned to China as of the end of 2016.

In 2016 alone, more than 432,000 foreign-educated Chinese had returned to the country, up 58.48 percent from that in 2012.

Second tier cities, compared to many so-called international cities, are actually first-tier.

Hangzhou, home to Alibaba, GDP 1.1 trillion yuan

Wuhan, Central China, GDP 1.2 trillion yuan

Chengdu, Western China, GDP 1.2 trillion yuan

These three cities combined, will surpass 1 trillion dollar GDP before 2025.

What is the tier system?
and what is the rank of Beijing and Shinghai? since both do not appear in the list/pictures above

I guess it's a classification of the city base on the population, economy and development.

Tier 1 is the city that equal to the world top cities like New York and Tokyo.

While tier 2 is a big city too but less famous and less developed compare with the tier 1 cities.

What @AndrewJin said, people are usually comparing tier 1 cities with greatest cities around the world like New York, Tokyo, etc.

While tier 2 cities, usually people look down on it. Tier 2 cities in China is not a small city as the population size is around 10 millions, and around 20-30 millions for the metropolitan area. The population is similar to New York, Tokyo, etc actually.

As per this criteria, Beijing and Shanghai should be in tier1 cities right? But the pictures shared by OP does not include them.

The op just shared tier 2 cities to show that tier 2 city is quite developed too and perhaps comparable with many top cities around the world.

Thank you for the correction. I see now

First-tier cities are not the only choice for overseas returnees in job hunting due to rising employment pressure, according to a joint report released by Education International Cooperation (EIC) Group Ltd. and China’s job-hunting websites, Guangzhou Daily reported.

The number of overseas returnees’ curriculum vitas increased by a factor of seven from 72,235 in 2014 to 514,352 in 2017, indicating rising employment pressure.

Chinese overseas returnees from the UK, US, Australia, and Japan top the list by 24.5 percent, 21.2 percent, 17.9 percent, and 8.6 percent, respectively.

In addition, the report pointed out that Chinese overseas returnees from the US, UK, Australia, and Germany are the most favored by employers, followed by Japan, Canada, France, Singapore, South Korea, and Russia.

Apart from China’s first-tier cities, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Nanjing, Chengdu, and Suzhou are also popular among overseas returnees searching for work.

The IT, finance, real estate, education, and training sectors, as well as the machinery manufacturing industry, are currently seeing the largest demand of overseas returnees, according to the report.

I'm afraid I would not be competitive at all if I were to go back to China.

Too old now, too dumb and too stuck in a rut. Mediocrity and too many foolish decisions weigh me down.

Tier 2&3 cities are what makes China great again!
The big four tier-1 are our targets!

Nanning, top 10 cities of Western China (ranked 50-60th in the city economy rank in 2016)
Tier 3

What is the tier system?
and what is the rank of Beijing and Shinghai? since both do not appear in the list/pictures above
tier system is unofficial, has no definite criteria.
But the big four (Shanghai Beijing Shenzhen and Guangzhou) is well recognised.
Other big regional centres are tier 2 like my hometown, the biggest city in Central China.
Cities like Nanning (my previous comment) is usually ranked tier 3.

Chongqing, tier 2 (in some ranking called semi-tier-1, but not well accepted)

tier4-5 cities, Zhoushan City, ranked 185th in 2016.
