China's emerging military-space architecture
China's drive to improve its space architecture is gathering pace, with its total of 70 satellites in orbit as of mid-2011. This puts it behind only the United States and Russia, with 440 and 100 respectively.
China's space and rocket sector could now be the world's second largest, poised to challenge the US.
China has become increasingly open about its commitment to pursuing a dual-use military-civilian architecture, which will require it to manage potential concerns in Washington about future challenges to current US dominance in this sector.
China's space capability has advanced rapidly in the past decade, with China beginning manned space flights, as well as making early steps towards a permanent manned presence in low Earth orbit and then to the Moon.
