China's days as workhouse of the world could be numbered

Of course it's challenging, but that's the fun part of it! ;)

But seriously, education and R&D is the key ... of course sound economic policies et cetera p.p. as well. :)

I cannot agree more. Another thing China needs to learn from Germany is the emphasis on engineering. Chinese products still have a lot of rough edges, which is bad and good (so has a lot of room to improve). No country can rely on servicing sector forever since it doesn't generate any value by itself. Selling expensive icecream cannot sustain the economy, that's the reason Spain and Italy are two PIGS countries. Germany and France should really dictate EU policy to move those lazy ***** back to work again.

Depends on which products. Huawei and ZTE are pretty good at both capital and consumer goods. Even companies like Xiaomi can make good smartphones. We also have some good clothing brands like Yichun, Shanghai Tang, MetersBonwe and Li Ning... clothing brands have no inherent value, just good quality, so they're a good proxy of "quality", like Prada.

I agree that our consumer cars are pretty bad though.

Yes I agree that China is not behind and may even lead on telecommunication sector. What China is behind is traditional manufacturing, especially on high quality lathe which is one of the keys for almost any industrial production. China just made its first Meglev train which Germany mastered in 1930s (sure it is different technologies). It takes time to catch up but China is definitely on the right track.

China is definitely getting more expensive as salaries are rising (funny how Indians refer us as "slave labor", and then boast that they have lower labor cost!).

We must move up the value chain with more emphasis on R&D and brand development. Go China!

yep, we've already taken back the home market in electrical appliances and TVs with Midea, Galanz, and Haier. Next step is consumer electronics and clothing. Cultural products will follow.

Our capital goods are already doing well, China is dominating telecom hardware and moving up in new industrial machinery like fiber laser welders.

.
we need to rely less on foreign-invested manufacturing and have our own domestic manufacturing.
we cant trust foreiners, they could move their manufacturing to any country.

moving up the value chain is vital.

and manufacturing is the backbone of an economic power, service sector complements the manufacturing sector.
manufacturing is wealth producing, services is wealth consuming.

Funny, this NYTimes article today says the exact opposite. US couldn't build an iPhone on the scale of China even if it wanted to, forget India.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/b...ueezed-middle-class.html?hp=&pagewanted=print
According to the NY Times article...

A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company’s dormitories, according to the executive. Each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day.
So the company keep workers obedient the way a military keep its soldiers obedient. No wonder YOU chose to live in the US: So you can live and work under US work laws while extolling the sheeple mentality of Chinese workers and the abuse they suffer as a sign of Chinese manufacturing superiority. I bet you have an iPhone.

Why can't we rely on immigration?

Why can't we rely on automation?
Colonizing countries who are hostile to us would kill two bird with one stone. Think of how wealthy China would be if we build factories in india, put indians to work, and ship those goods together with india's horde of gold jewerly back to China.

Or we can hire ageing Chinese people as a watchman and house keepers, you don't have to worry about them then ..

Money talks and it is the same everywhere. You probably don't work for IT companies where we have to compete against computers and need to take care of business sometimes 2:00am in the morning when something breaks. Amazon has every employee wearing a pager so they are on call 24 hours round the clock. All successful businesses need skillful and dedicated employees. And that's why unions are ruining this country. Welcome to the real world.

And I don't own an iphone.

not sustainable and would increase unemployment.

i just wish we could isolate ourselves and be left alone as the rest of the world sinks.

I'm still really amazed at how successful Apple is. Is the iPhone really, really that much better than other phones? Better enough to justify its much higher price? Or is it the result of advertisement?

The issue is not money but of course money talks. The issue is why does Apple and so many others have China does the hardware manufacturing: A sheeple labor force. And when you have this kind of obedient workers who are mostly rural immigrants desperate for a better life and the possibility of meeting something called a 'female', of course they will live in corporate dormitories readied to be woken from sleep, given bare rations, and put to work at any time. This is not the same thing as having an electronic leash called a 'pager', which FYI, I do have one, and that I work for a major NAND Flash memory manufacturer. I have called/paged people at 0200 hrs before. I have called/paged alternate when primaries do not respond for a variety of reasons. Dedicated employees are so because of internal motivations, but show me a single US manufacturer where employees are pretty much forced to live in corporate dormitories, have practically no rights, and are given rations before work.

But the real world here is that YOU live in the US under US labor laws while praising how China's corporate leadership exploit a sheeple labor force.
