China's Chang'e-4 probe resumes work for 28th lunar day

BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The lander and rover of China's Chang'e-4 probe have begun their 28th lunar day of work on the far side of the moon.

Landing on the moon on Jan. 3, 2019, the Chang'e-4 probe has survived 795 Earth days on the moon, the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration said Monday.

A lunar day is equal to about 14 days on Earth, and a lunar night is of the same length. The solar-powered probe switches to dormant mode during the lunar night.

The rover Yutu-2, or Jade Rabbit-2, is currently located about 429 meters northwest of the landing site.

[Chang'e-4 completed the 28th lunar day of work]

The Chang'e-4 lander and the "Yutu-2" lunar rover finished their 28th lunar day of work at 2 o'clock on March 21 and at 17:09 on March 20, respectively, and entered moon night dormancy. Up to now, the Chang'e 4 lander and the "Yutu-2" lunar rover have survived 808 Earth days on the moon. The lunar rover traveled about 30 meters during the day and the accumulated mileage was 682.77 meters.

China's lunar rover travels 682.77 meters on far side of moon

BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- The lander and the rover of the Chang'e-4 probe have been switched to dormant mode for the lunar night after working stably for a 28th lunar day, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.

The lander was switched to dormant mode at 2 a.m. Sunday (Beijing Time), and the rover, Yutu-2 (Jade Rabbit-2), at 5:09 p.m. Saturday, said the center.

The Chang'e-4 probe, which was switched to dormant mode during the lunar night due to the lack of solar power, had been on the far side of the moon for more than 800 Earth days, and the rover has traveled 682.77 meters. A lunar day and night each equals about 14 days on Earth.

Through an analysis of detection data obtained by the Chang'e-4 probe, researchers have made a series of scientific discoveries including the mineral composition, and topographic and geological evolution history of the landing site.

Researchers from the Aerospace Information Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences analyzed the spectral characteristics of the rocks in the rover's inspection area and inferred that the rocks probably originated from the Finsen impact crater.

[Yutu 2 enters the 29th day]

On the far side of the moon, sunlight once again sprinkled on the Chang'e 4 lander and the "Yutu 2" lunar rover. The two were awakened autonomously by sunlight and ended their moon-night dormancy at 21:43 and 3:54 on April 6th respectively, thereby begin their 29th lunar work day.

Up to now, Chang'e-4 has spent 825 Earth days on the far side of the moon.

As shown in Figure 1, the rover is currently located at LE02805, which is located in the northwest direction of the landing site of Chang'e 4, which is about 455 meters straight as a crow fly, and the traverse mileage is about 682.8 meters. (China Lunar Exploration Project)

China's Chang'e-4 discovers glass globules on far side of moon

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Yutu-2 lunar rover of China's Chang'e-4 mission has discovered two macroscopic translucent glass globules during its exploration of the far side of the moon, which could potentially help reveal the moon's early impact history.

According to a study published in Science Bulletin, the Yutu-2 rover captured images of two translucent globules using its panoramic camera.

No composition data has been obtained for the globules. But their unique morphology and local context suggest they are most likely impact glasses -- quenched anorthositic impact melts produced during cratering events -- rather than being of volcanic origin or delivered from other planetary bodies, the researchers said.

Lunar anorthosite is a major rock of the lunar highlands, which formed in the lunar magma ocean.

The researchers said the globules are different from the glass beads sampled by the Apollo missions, as they are larger in size and exhibit colors.

They predicted that the glass globules would be abundant across the lunar highlands, providing promising sampling targets that could reveal the early impact history of the moon.

The Chang'e-4 probe, launched on Dec. 8, 2018, made the first-ever soft landing in the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on Jan. 3, 2019. So far, Yutu-2 has traveled more than 1,000 meters on the far side of the moonrde.
