China's Chang'e-4 probe resumes work for sixth lunar day
Source: Xinhua| 2019-05-29 13:23:23|Editor: Liangyu

BEIJING, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The lander and the rover of the Chang'e-4 probe have resumed work for the sixth lunar day on the far side of the moon after "sleeping" during the extremely cold night.

The lander woke up at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the rover, Yutu-2 (Jade Rabbit-2), awoke at 2:16 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.

For the sixth lunar day, the lander's neutron radiation detector and low-frequency radio detector will be restarted to conduct scientific tasks including particle radiation observation and low-frequency radio astronomical observation.

The rover's panoramic camera, detection radar, infrared imaging spectrometer and neutral atom detector will be restarted during the sixth lunar day.

China's Chang'e-4 probe, launched on Dec 8, 2018, made the first-ever soft landing on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on Jan. 3.

A lunar day equals 14 days on Earth, and a lunar night is the same length. The Chang'e-4 probe switched to a dormant mode during the lunar night due to the lack of solar power.

As a result of the tidal locking effect, the moon's revolution cycle is the same as its rotation cycle, and the same side always faces Earth.

The far side of the moon has unique features, and scientists expect Chang'e-4 to provide breakthrough findings.

The scientific tasks of the Chang'e-4 mission include low-frequency radio astronomical observation, surveying the terrain and landforms, detecting the mineral composition and shallow lunar surface structure and measuring neutron radiation and neutral atoms.

The Chang'e-4 mission embodies China's hope to combine human wisdom in space exploration with four payloads developed by the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Saudi Arabia.

China's Chang'e-4 probe resumes work for 7th lunar day

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- The lander and the rover of the Chang'e-4 probe have resumed work for the seventh lunar day on the far side of the moon after "sleeping" during the extreme cold night.

The lander woke up at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, and the rover, Yutu-2 (Jade Rabbit-2), awoke at 1:26 p.m. Wednesday. Both are in normal working condition, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.

The rover has traveled more than 212 meters on the moon to conduct scientific exploration on the virgin territory.

China's Chang'e-4 probe, launched on Dec. 8, 2018, made the first-ever soft landing on the Von Karman Crater in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon on Jan. 3.

Yutu-2 Still on the Move!

content_M1314237625LR_mos.str01.rotate_enlarge2x_495mwide.png
Yutu-2 (horizontal arrow) was about 130 meters west of the Chang'e 4 lander (vertical arrow) on 3 June 2019. North is up, image is 495 meters wide and enlarged two times, M1314237625L [NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University].

Once a month, LRO passes over the Chang'e 4 landing site, allowing LROC to capture a new image. LROC has now imaged the site five times (since the landing) and observed Yutu-2 to have traveled a total of 186 meters (distance measured using the rover tracks). If you squint, portions of the rover tracks are visible as a dark path in the images from April, May, and possibly June. Progress over the past two months has been slower than in previous months; perhaps the rover has found some interesting geology and is lingering to collect a comprehensive set of measurements!

Progress of the Yutu-2 rover over the past 5 months. Note that the visibility of the rover tracks is highly dependent on lighting conditions [NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University].

Period Distance (m) Cumulative Distance (m)

30 Jan. to 28 Feb. 63 117
28 Feb. to 10 Apr. 53 170
10 Apr. to 7 May 6 176
7 May to 3 June 10 186

During the latest pass (3 June 2019), the Sun was 45° above the horizon, close to its maximum elevation for this latitude (45° S). LRO pitched 29° back toward the south, so that Sun was nearly directly behind the spacecraft (16° phase angle). From this vantage point, looking down and out toward the lander with the Sun at its back, LROC caught a strong glint off of the Chang'e 4 solar panels. Reflectance differences among surface materials are also usually more apparent from these viewing conditions, thus the goal of collecting this image was to document albedo differences that were caused by the Chang'e 4 engine plume as it interacted with the surface during landing.

Same image as above with no arrows and at original pixel scale. Image is 990 meters wide, M1314237625L [NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University].

Under similar lighting conditions, the Chang'e 3 plume effects were quite apparent: the area around the lander was about 10% more reflective than its surroundings. However, though there does appear to be a small region of elevated reflectance around the lander, the "blast zone" at the Chang'e 4 site is more difficult to discern. This may be due in part to the lack of a comparable (Sun at our back) image from before the landing, or it may result from the fact that the landing occurred on a small region of high topography between three impact craters, making reflectance differences harder to see. It could also be that the effects of the engine plume on the reflectance of the surface were smaller due to the properties of the landing site itself, where a thin dusting of highland materials from Finsen crater covers the mare surface.

LROC will keep imaging the site as the Sun angles and look angles vary, to better understand the reflectance of this region, and to watch Yutu-2 keep on roving and exploring!

Kim Stanley Robinson Built a Moon Base in His Mind
To write his new novel, Red Moon, the sci-fi author became an expert on lunar colony tech

By Sally Adee

The award-winning sci-fi author Kim Stanley Robinson has some predictions about where the first moon base will be located—and who will build it.

...

Robinson’s latest book imagines our future on the moon. It’s exacting in its detail and has already shown to be prescient: Since Red Moon was published in October 2018, the Chinese have announced a plan to build a base at the lunar south pole, right where Robinson placed their outpost in his book. He talked to IEEE Spectrum about the world he conjured in his work and what it might tell us about our lunar future, why you can’t colonize the moon for profit, what kind of tech will be necessary to get and stay there, and why the best spoils will go to China.

Can't wait for China landed their guys on moon surface. When it does, hope their also built space labs/base there.

It need to have some breakthru for transport to space which increase payload while shorten the time without high cost.

The No. 4 Lander and the Yutu No. 2 rover completed the seventh month of work and ushered in the moon night again. At 9 o'clock on July 9th, the No. 4 lander completed the moon-night mode in accordance with ground command. Subsequently, the Yutu No. 2 rover entered slumber at 9:10 on July 9.

In the seventh month, the lunar neutrons and radiation dose detectors and low-frequency radio spectrometers on the No. 4 lander were started as scheduled, and scientific exploration missions continued. During this period, the Yutu No.2 patrol vehicle continued to move according to the established route, and related detection work was carried out at multiple detection points. Infrared spectrometers, panoramic cameras, neutral atomic detectors, and moon ground penetrating radars obtained a large amount of scientific detection data.

The Chang'e No. 4 ground application system team released the sixth batch of scientific detection data to the scientific research core team in early July, with a total data volume of 1.2G and a total of 531 data files.
