International Assessment and Strategy Center > Research > Two Cheers For the 2007 PLA Report
"SLC-4 Phased Array Radar: A version of this space program radar could support a potential mobile ABM system. Credit: Chinese Internet" (Published on June 20th, 2007)
----------
Eight years have passed
It has been eight years since the disclosure of China's mobile SLC-4 Phased Array Radar. There should be an upgraded version by now.
We expect an updated SLC-4 to be larger and more powerful. The use of composite materials permits a lighter frame. The transmit/receive (T/R) modules should be made of new materials to handle greater power (for longer range). We also expect the efficiency of the T/R modules to have increased. The software to detect an incoming ballistic missile should also have been improved.
Interferometry
We have seen multiple examples in the use of interferometry by China.
1. Chinese NOSS (Naval Ocean Surveillance System) satellites
2. China's highly-advanced CETC DWL002 Passive Detection System
3. China's SOSUS
4. China's Deep Space Network
5. China's Yuanwang space-tracking ship with radio telescope array
The sensitivity of the SLC-4 Phased Array Radar can be greatly enhanced by networking two or more units together in an interferometer.
South China Sea
Since the SLC-4 Phased Array Radar is mobile (see the truck mount that it rests upon), it can be quickly transported to the Chinese South China Sea islands when needed.
Also, the mobile nature of the SLC-4 allows for an easy replacement. If an SLC-4 is damaged during battle, simply ship in a replacement.
Mobile ABM capability
China's SLC-4 Phased Array Radar provides a mobile ABM (anti-ballistic missile) capability. China can set up networks of SLC-4 radars along its entire eastern coast, Hainan Island, and South China Sea islands.
