If you are not kidding(since you are 10 years members here), you won't use GDP as indicator. There are many fundamental things which are much more crucial.
In 1948, India was more advanced than China, such as much longer railway, steel production, and so on. In Mao's era, China eliminate illiteracy for younger generation, even elders must learn to read.

In 2011, India Literacy was about the same as China when Mao died.
Mao eliminate schistosomiasis, malaria, variola in the first couple of years after 1949. Mao defeated all his enemies, he never lose a war, including USA. China developed advanced hydrogen bomb during Mao era which India still doesn't have yet.
The list can goes on and on.
TBH, India has much more friendly international environment, but India lake of many things which are crucial.
India was kind of brainwashed by west, and sorry I don't see a bright future of India.
Well, We can differ, but I feel GDP is not at all a bad basis for comparison.
I do understand your perspective.
