China will lift its nationwide game console ban

The same argument was said well over 10 years ago about US pc gaming vs console.

The problem really boiled down to pc compatibility issues.

With a console you only need one machine to test and optimize your game.
With a pc you have to deal with a room full of Windows XP, 2000, Vista, 7, 8, (now 10) running with different RAM configuration and different video cards with various driver versions. Inevitably when you release a game you get an outpouring of people saying "your game sucks because it doesn't run well on my machine even though my gaming rig specs says it should".

So console ports tend to be easier to manage because they know from day one it will work. They usually make it out the door quicker.

Look at this recent fiasco:

****************************************************************************
‘Batman Arkham Knight’ Seems To Continue Trend Of Bad PC Ports

"WB and Rocksteady released Batman: Arkham Knight today to the world, and while players on console may not be having any issues, PC players are in for a world of trouble.

Trouble first brewed when various sites spotted Batman: Arkham Knight’s PC requirements change Monday. The requirements, spotted on the Batman Arkham Knight Steam page notes a higher AMD card requirement, moving up to the HD 7950, as well as Rocksteady admitting issues potentially for AMD users.

We also want to note that there are some known issues with the performance of Batman: Arkham Knight for PC owners using AMD graphics cards. We are working closely with AMD to rectify these issues as quickly as possible and will provide updates here as they become available. We thank you for your patience in this matter.

However, Reddit users who have been able to test the new game as it releases in their area are reporting massive issues, memory leaks, and a 30-FPS cap on Batman: Arkham Knight, regardless of their hardware choice. However, this cap seems to be turned off during benchmark testing, as users are able to benchmark for higher frame-rate results.

While many may see PC gamers complaining about games on their platform, Batman: Arkham Knight is an example of yet another game releasing in a halfway-broken state. While most optimization seems to take place for console players, which most companies deem the higher percentage of users, PC players are typically left in the waiting in the wind. Also, for Batman: Arkham Knight to institute a framerate lock (which Fallout 4 was reported to do so till Bethesda clarified Monday) on the game (though according to some it’s unlockable via.ini files, though reddit is reporting instability issues when doing so) also shows that WB and Rocksteady don’t understand the PC audience, who upgrade hardware to avoid the “cinematic” framerates of their console counterparts.

Hopefully a patch will be rolling out soon that will fix issues hindering performance for PC users of Arkham Knight, but the fact a patch is relied upon proves that this trend will continue. In the end, while Steam users may exceed the number of PS Plus and Xbox Live users, PC ports will always play second fiddle to console versions of games, which is a shame. All versions should be treated equally and optimized to eke out the best performance of their respective platform. However, Batman: Arkham Knight proves that yet again, that ideal is still a ways off in the future.

Having issues with Batman: Arkham Knight? Sound off in the comments below."

PC is not designed to play Games. While console is build form ground up for games.

Used to be when Console graphic is way worse than PC, and the bit magnification issue mean playing on a 32 inch TV will lost most of its resolution than playing on a 24 inch 1920 dpi monitor.

But recently the Console have revolutionized the gaming experience and the tech caught up and today gaming console are not much different (even somehow better) than a general PC spec. Plus the computer ran a lot of thing on the background while console only do one function and one function only, and that's gaming. PC is now losing ground to console by days and we would probably see Console will completely kill off PC gaming in the future

haha, man, whenever i invite my buddies to my house, they'll see the Wii on in my living room and hear this:

ps. its a great party game , lol, for kids and the family.

@+4vsgorillas-Apebane ,

yeah, PlayStation and Sega Dreamcast are big sale in China in mid to late 1990s.

Somehow the Original Xbox is not pretty much welcomed in China....

but PC is the jack of all trades. and to be fair, you can emulate any games from Arcade to PC-98 / PC-88 games. no console capable of emulating these games (as far as i know)

besides, PC is the place where creativites are created. there are many Indie Games for PC, most of times i bought it from japanese site.

not only games, but Visual Novels are also in PC. i do enjoy titles like Fate/Stay Night or Angel Beats. once you get to try one of these, you'll get addicted to it, seriously.

i used to by my stuff from DLsite or DMM. sometimes i play the online game from DMM (Kancolle, anyone?). most of them are Web browser MMO so it doesn't eats my Hard Disk much.

i Love retro games. i'd pick PC over consoles anytime because right now, i'm on a roll with games like these

I am not aware of any console games with multimillion dollar prize tournaments like DOTA, League of Legends or Starcraft. Are you sure that PC gaming will die out lol?

You seem to forget that console games are very awkward for strategy games, especially real time strategy, since its very hard to control multiple units simultaneously, manage an economy and also micro units on the battlefield without a keyboard and mouse. Sure you can play a 1 character RPG or FPS with a console better than a PC, but good luck playing Starcraft or Civilization.

It's similar to the individual installed exe apps vs web browser based functionality.
Web stuff can't do 100% of the stuff an installed exe can do. However if it can do 95% of the things in an easier way it will take away exe marketshare quickly. Look what happened.

real time strategy is a major market due to its popularity with competitive gamers. League of Legends is the most popular game in the world right now. DOTA has TI which I think is one of the highest prize pools for a competiitve gaming tournament ever, and its held every year. right now the prize pool is 17 million dollars. Starcraft was the first competitive game. Hell, even Warcraft 3 still holds tournaments. I play league of legends at a decently high level (I'm Platinum 2, in the top 5% of North America) and I realize that it's gonna be impossible without a mouse and keyboard.

In addition, there's another market for MMORPGS which is also nearly impossible to play with using a console due to needing very fast maneuverability granted only with a mouse and having sometimes 20+ spells to cast, all of which have to be assigned a unique hotkey. Good luck without a keyboard.

meanwhile, console games are usually much less competitive due to a lower skill cap from limited buttons and alot of maneuvering being built in, rather than having the player have to micromanage everything.

Well, from a user stand point, I see your point, but for a developer stand point, it's harder than you said.

Actually, what is the different now between a console and a computer? Not much, I can do anything with my PS4 that a computer can do, just not using MS Office. And the problem is, computer based game programming are more complicated than console based game programming, a lot of debut involve and don't forget RAM in a computer does not do well with continuous data processing, unless a ECC RAM were used. So you stand a pretty good chance to crash in modern gaming anyway.

The way the current gaming heading is, company sign exclusive deal to either one or both of the console company and launch their game with one or both company, then come around and develop PC version of the same game. Basically a revamp and recode of the same game already in console platform. And as console tech advance today we see Graphic card company (AMD and Nvidia) devote yet more resource to develop next gen gaming chipset that runs better and faster than PC graphic. Don't forget, you can get a PS4 with 400 bucks with 8 core AMD CPU design just for gaming and a GCN 8 GDDR5 graphic which is basically an up-version of R9-285 (Which basically 2 R9285 in cross fire mode), you cannot get the same set up in PC for less than $700

And judging from your comment, you are AT LEAST 4 to 5 years out from the console gaming universe.

Today console gaming not only uses interactive gaming (like Kinetic) but also more focus on point direction input (Like your traditional keyboard and mouse) Recent development includes Xbox announce Mouse adaptation with their console within the next 6 months. What they are basically working on is a common Window 10 PC-Xbox one GUI to allow mouse and keyboard uses on Xbox One. Also if I remember correctly, both console are working on touch input convert from your own TV.

Expecting PS4 to follow suit

third link is about the development cost for a game i believe.

also, none of them compare to the 17 millions dollar prize pool of dota TI tournament.

lol, my bad

The thing is, PC online gaming have a serious head start which about 7 to 8 years ahead than console gaming.

That's why you see that big tournament going on with multi-millions dollars deal.

Problem is, as console inch closer and closer to PC, both in term of I/O and Graphic quality, those tournament would most likely move over to console gaming. It is actually a trend that had already started. No doubt you can see the similarity of a PS4 and Xbox One to a PC, the 8th Gen gaming console would basically a PC inclination

console was first, since alot of them evolved from electronic arcade technology. super Nintendo was around in the early 90s too.

Online gaming.

Consoles were pretty late with head-to-head online gaming (at least mainstream machines from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft)
