China will lift its nationwide game console ban

China technically lifted its longstanding ban on game consoles last year, but only for companies that registered in the Shanghai free trade zone. Needless to say, that put a damper on sales in the world's most populous country. However, the gloves just came off -- China's Ministry of Culture has approved the manufacture and sale of consoles anywhere in the nation. Companies like Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony no longer have to hold back (or rely on black market sales) when doing business. They'll still have to grapple with heavy censorship of the games themselves, but that beats a lack of official options.

The question is whether or not these set-tops will take off. Thanks in part to the console ban, China's gaming culture revolves around PCs and (more recently) smartphones. It may be tough to convince locals that an Xbox One at home beats an internet cafe full of friends, especially when game systems are relatively expensive (China's nominal GDP per capita is just over $8,100). You're still likely to see more Chinese console gamers, but there's no guarantees that they'll embrace the concept with the same gusto you see in Europe or North America.

Wise people would choose PS4 due to the diversity of the game titles it has/will have.

PC gaming is entrenched in Chinese gaming culture. It will take some strong exclusive console titles to buck this trend.

The same argument was said well over 10 years ago about US pc gaming vs console.

The problem really boiled down to pc compatibility issues.

With a console you only need one machine to test and optimize your game.
With a pc you have to deal with a room full of Windows XP, 2000, Vista, 7, 8, (now 10) running with different RAM configuration and different video cards with various driver versions. Inevitably when you release a game you get an outpouring of people saying "your game sucks because it doesn't run well on my machine even though my gaming rig specs says it should".

So console ports tend to be easier to manage because they know from day one it will work. They usually make it out the door quicker.

Look at this recent fiasco:

‘Batman Arkham Knight’ Seems To Continue Trend Of Bad PC Ports

"WB and Rocksteady released Batman: Arkham Knight today to the world, and while players on console may not be having any issues, PC players are in for a world of trouble.

Trouble first brewed when various sites spotted Batman: Arkham Knight’s PC requirements change Monday. The requirements, spotted on the Batman Arkham Knight Steam page notes a higher AMD card requirement, moving up to the HD 7950, as well as Rocksteady admitting issues potentially for AMD users.

We also want to note that there are some known issues with the performance of Batman: Arkham Knight for PC owners using AMD graphics cards. We are working closely with AMD to rectify these issues as quickly as possible and will provide updates here as they become available. We thank you for your patience in this matter.

However, Reddit users who have been able to test the new game as it releases in their area are reporting massive issues, memory leaks, and a 30-FPS cap on Batman: Arkham Knight, regardless of their hardware choice. However, this cap seems to be turned off during benchmark testing, as users are able to benchmark for higher frame-rate results.

While many may see PC gamers complaining about games on their platform, Batman: Arkham Knight is an example of yet another game releasing in a halfway-broken state. While most optimization seems to take place for console players, which most companies deem the higher percentage of users, PC players are typically left in the waiting in the wind. Also, for Batman: Arkham Knight to institute a framerate lock (which Fallout 4 was reported to do so till Bethesda clarified Monday) on the game (though according to some it’s unlockable via.ini files, though reddit is reporting instability issues when doing so) also shows that WB and Rocksteady don’t understand the PC audience, who upgrade hardware to avoid the “cinematic” framerates of their console counterparts.

Hopefully a patch will be rolling out soon that will fix issues hindering performance for PC users of Arkham Knight, but the fact a patch is relied upon proves that this trend will continue. In the end, while Steam users may exceed the number of PS Plus and Xbox Live users, PC ports will always play second fiddle to console versions of games, which is a shame. All versions should be treated equally and optimized to eke out the best performance of their respective platform. However, Batman: Arkham Knight proves that yet again, that ideal is still a ways off in the future.

Having issues with Batman: Arkham Knight? Sound off in the comments below."

Should have gotten a Wii as well for multiple player platform.

I even play Supermario world (yes, the SNES game) for the Wii.

Enjoyable, family fun.

It's also sad when a game company which was one of the original leaders in pushing graphics cards on PC's is demoing their latest game using a console.

Dude, I would be so embarrassed to be seen waving and gesturing about in the living room. The Wii looks fun but Im too old to be seen using one.

When I have kids it might seem O.K to play with them but a thirty something playing Wii will draw raised eyebrows.

Unfortunately no.

I was too poor to have a console back in those days.

My gaming needs were played out in arcades back then. Street fighter 2, aliens vs predator beat them up etc.

First console started with the Ps2.
