Gentlemen, seems like diplomacy is being forayed in earnest.

(Reuters) - China and Vietnam have agreed to handle maritime disputes through dialogue, Chinese state media reported on Monday, months after ties between the two countries hit a three-decade low in a row over a Chinese oil rig in disputed waters.

The two Communist neighbors must respect each other and focus on long-term interests, President Xi Jinping said, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

"Sino-Vietnamese relations have been advancing continuously since the two nations established diplomatic relations, despite some twists and turns," he said.

Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang said his country was ready to "properly deal with maritime issues through friendly consultation so that the issues will not affect its relations with China", according to Xinhua.

Sang said Vietnam was ready to step up high-level contacts and non-government swaps to strengthen its links with China.

The two countries agreed to "address and control" maritime disputes, state media reported last month, in the wake of the row sparked by China's May 2 deployment of a $1 billion-oil rig to disputed waters that straddle a key shipping lane.

Defense leaders from the two countries held talks last month in Beijing, and both sides agreed to "gradually resume" military ties, Xinhua reported.

Vietnam has reacted with alarm at China's military rise and increasingly assertive posture, broadening military ties with the United States as well as with Cold War-era patron Russia.

Territorial disputes in the potentially oil-rich South China Sea have roiled ties between China and many neighbors. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims in the waters, crossed by $5 trillion of ship-borne goods every year.

We (viet) alway want that, peace for good, nobody want the wars, we have enough.
But China seem like don't want to stop their aggressive actions.

In one hand, Vietnam Government will keep good words, and hold a tight relationship with China about political and ideology (communist), but in another hand, we will building up our strength to protect our sovereignty, because they will not want to have a true dialogue if their opponents are too weak. (simple took it and made the other party accept it!)

.
Let think, if China really want to do that, there's no decade long story about ASEAN vs China in SCS issue.
There's always a DOC to COC route, but China postpone time after time to conclude it.

.
no amount of dialogue is going to change China stance on the 9 dash line. China has all the leverage and they know it.

China is always for bilateral consultation and dialogue on territorial issues. Any attempt to multilateralize the issue will be brushed off. In this particular case, it is good to see Vietnam, probably, coming to its senses and sitting down on the table to talk to China on a bilateral basis.

Painting Vietnam's own particular dispute as one of ASEAN or, worse yet, international issue will not pass through and the Vietnamese side might have understood that.

We will see.

But, overall, encouraging development. Chinese diplomacy has been quite active and engaged on multiple fronts recently.

China talk and do always different.

1955, two party agreed thast the territory disputed should be solve base on negotiation of two side. But 1974 China attacked and occupied Paracel Islands of Vietnam.

1975, both party agreed again that the matter will do by peaceful negotiation, but 1988 China again attacked and robbed Gac Ma ( south John reef) and other four reefs of Vietnam.

Chinse is untrusted people.

For Paracel Island dispute is related two side only, Vietnam and China, but China denied to discuss with Vietnam.

For the Spratly dispute is related to Phi, Bruney and Maysia. How can we do it , ?

However, China wants a personal talk between China and Vietnam, while VN wants an international talk with big powers come in to play. Both sides try best to protect their interest, that's why we are still here argueing, instead of our diplomats.

Vietnam's desire and intentions are well knows. But, given that, according to the report, the sides agreed to a "dialogue," which I presume between the two sides, there is no big power coming into. It is Vietnam and China, sitting on a table, talking to each other. China will not engage in multilateral talks on territorial issues.

There is no dispute on the Paracels.

Vietnam is going to make their big move in the South China Sea. The PLA ground forces are on stand-by for a massive response.

We always said we welcome any negotiation to settle dispute. But don't think for a second that you can bring some "outsider" in to settle a territorial dispute with us.

before we get into this whole thing of who's trustworthy or not.

Let me just ask this, what exactly can Vietnam offer China, I don't mean islands, I mean in general. What does Vietnam bring to the table, like a Japan, or UK to the US.

You say we are untrustworthy? We are not your guardian angel, that's not our role, we will do what we want, the question becomes not what can Vietnam do to stop us, which you can't, but what can you bring to the table, that makes you valuable.

I know what good relations could do for Vietnam's military, economy, political influence, and pretty much every aspect of Vietnam, but what can Vietnam give in return.

once you figure that out, it doesn't really matter what you think of us.

as human being, we bring our rightness to negotiation table. in 21 century China can not apply jungle law here.

In fact, with idiot nine dashed claim, China bring other super powers back to the region.

so essentially you have no idea what I'm talking about.

I'm not talking about the negotiations. I'm saying Vietnam as a nation, as a people, what can you bring to the world that would make you a valued member of the group.

You want trustworthy? Bring something to the table. America will turn on the Philippines on the drop of a hat, but not on Japan, cause Japan brings a ton to the table. (I'm not talking military here, though it helps.)

So what can you bring to the table.

Oh and piece of advice, don't ever say things like that, makes you sound weak and 5 years old.

You are kid. This is territory dispute related to sovereignty of country of Viet nation base on rules of internal law, there is not economy trade negotiation.
