Prachanda's aide fixing deal with China?

Ahead of the key polls for Nepal's new Premier, Maoists have landed in a controversy as a wiretap alleged that the party had sought Rs 50 crore from China to "buy" lawmakers to get its supremo Prachanda elected to the coveted post after five rounds of voting failed to produce a winner.

In a telephonic conversation, the tape of which was leaked to the media here, Unified CPN-Maoists' Foreign Department chief Krishna Bahadur Mahara is purportedly heard asking an unknown Chinese official for Rs 50 crore to buy 50 MPs, apparently from Terai-based Madhesi parties which have been boycotting the polls, for their support to Prachanda in tomorrow's election.

However, Mahara, in a statement, dismissed the tape as "fabricated, misleading and fictitious."

Extracts of the alleged conversation were carried by 'The Himalayan Times', which said that Mahara agreed to meet the Chinese official in Hong Kong after seeking Rs 50 crore. The audio tape was also broadcast by local TV channels.

"In the conversation, Mahara asks the man at the other end of the telephone speaking with a Chinese accent for financial support of 50 crore Nepalese rupees to persuade 50 lawmakers to vote for Maoist chief Prachanda during the sixth round of election for Prime Minister," another daily 'Republica' reported.

Both Prachanda and Nepali Congress Vice President Ramchandra Poudyal had been rejected in the previous five rounds of voting in Parliament for the post of Prime Minister. A candidate needs the support of 301 MPs in the 601-member Constituent Assembly to emerge victorious.

Earlier, CP Mainali, President of CPN-Marxist Leninist, had also alleged that Maoists had spent Rs 5 crore to break his party. Last month CPN-ML had split into two groups and four breakaway members of the party had voted for Prachanda in the previous round of voting.

Maoists, the single largest party, have 237 MPs in Parliament.

In his conversation with the Chinese official, Mahara allegedly said that Maoists had the support of 10-15 members from an outside party and needed support from 50 others, local media reported.

Both the Madhesi front and CPN-UML have remained neutral during all previous five rounds of voting.

The recent meddling by Indian govt harassing the Nepali media for exposing low quality of Indian products have added to the hostility and hate towards India in Nepal.

Time for India to do away wit its bullying attitude

Hmm, I finally convinced India and Nepal share so many things in common, even in bribery, but you can easily tell the different between a master and a beginner judging from this news article, see how Indians twist the tiltle completely to serve his personal agenda? even an everyday Indian can master the art of cheating, think about the elite one....
Nepalese need to learn more from those professional Indian criminals hall of famers to master their bribery and corruption skills.:partay:

India had earned more hate recently in Nepal.

They have killed Nepali Media Tycoon. Just go and seek the reaction of Nepalese on this and majority are abusing India badly.

Then Indian official govt tried to harass Nepali media and threatened it of dire consequences which is more like street gangsters attitude.

with this they earned more hate there.

Now this new stunt by India for spreading fabricated tape ahead of elections.

I live next door to nepal and go there probably more than once a week..so I dont need to ask someone reading some article to tell me how much hate/love we have for each other..
And BTW the strongest bond between us between HINDUSTAN and NEPAL is something which i dont need to tell..
One thing you will not find any where is that the hate for the Maoists growing in nepal after they have shown their real face of being as Power hungry as last king was..So dont be surprised if you want yet another revolution in Nepal this time by the cadres of maoists against their top leaders..

Jana complaing about twisting fact and orange media......

Good for you and neither i am talking emotionally like you. There is a BIG difference on ground. Anyway no need to read articles to know that. The Indian interference there had earned something for India.

That is their internal matter and i know what they think of Maoists.

The last time we have seen India was all honey honey and praise for Prachanda but when Prachanda shows some eyes India comes up with new tactics.

Coming to the topic this new drama by Indian orange media is not appreciated as well. coming up with a fake audio tape to blame one party and also drag China into it to serve Indian propaganda purpose and affect the elections in Nepal and create unrest

I am not at all emotional dear..What is there to be emotional..
About Indian interference---We will always try to have a friendly government in our neighborhood, there is every need to stop some country from gaining a foothold which is not regarded to be very friendly to us..

Well dont get into orange or, red media stuff...I am not the right person to debate on this because the debate will unnecessarily fill up pages and involve a lot of not so desirable comments..

About India praising Prachanda--Thats called courtesy. When some head of state comes to our country, we usually treat him with honor he deserves.

Nepal Maoists lose PM's race, blame India :lol:

KATHMANDU: Nepal's opposition Maoist party's manoeuvre to divide the regional parties and ride to power again on their support backfired badly on Sunday when their chairman and former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda failed to win the prime ministerial election, for the sixth time in a row.

Even before the controversial election started, the former guerrillas began blaming their current archenemy India for the failure, accusing India's external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of plotting to ensure Prachanda's failure in an election already marred by charges of floor-crossing, horse-trading and backstabbing.:rofl:

The 55-year-old former revolutionary listened wryly as the results of the election were announced. Though his party is the largest in parliament with 236 members, Prachanda could poll only an additional four votes from other parties, still falling short of 60 more to become the 34th prime minister of Nepal. While 101 MPs voted against him, 163 stayed neutral. His lone rival, Nepali Congress parliamentary party chief Ram Chandra Poudel, received just 122 votes while 242 MPs voted against him and 172 sat on the fence.

Though the numbers varied a little, the overall trend has remained the same in all six rounds of vote started in July after the Maoists forced prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to resign on June 30. Two of the largest groups in parliament that could have provided a way out of the protracted deadlock – Nepal's Communist party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) with its 109 MPs and the bloc of four Terai parties with their 81 votes -- have been rigidly abstaining, contributing to the impasse.

This time though, the Maoists were banking on being able to divide the Terai front and wrest the additional votes needed. Preliminary reports said they were partly successful. Former foreign minister Upendra Yadav's Madhesi Janadhikar Forum is rumoured to have exited the Terai alliance after a war of words on Sunday. However, the other three parties decided to stay together.

The Terai parties' cold feet come after the Maoists were badly embarrassed last week by an audio tape surfacing from nowhere. The taped conversation appears to be between former Maoist minister and spokesman Krishna Bahadur Mahara and an unnamed male, who promises a bounty of NRS 500 million from a "friend" in China to buy the votes of 50 Terai MPs.

Mahara predictably dismissed the tape as fabricated while his party on Sunday said it would begin an investigation to determine its authenticity. Looking for a scapegoat, the Maoists also blamed India for the tape, alleging it was manufactured and distributed by RAW to discredit them as well as drag China into the controversy. However, it has not been easy for them to shake off the horse-trading slur. Three days ago, communist leader C P Mainali, not known to be close to India, had made similar allegations.

Mainali told the media he had been offered NRS 50 million to vote for the Maoists. His refusal, he added, led to the former guerrillas causing a split in his Communist Party of Nepal-Marxist Leninist with the breakaway group supporting the Maoists.

Now, the former rebels are likely to seek to withdraw Prachanda from the race instead of courting a seventh snub. For that, their leadership Sunday decided to re-open talks with the parties and members of civil society. However, the two major ruling parties, the Nepali Congress and the UML, are not going to go out of their way to reach an understanding with the Maoists.

"The tape and the horse-trading slur shows the real face of the Maoists," Nepali Congress spokesman Arjun Narsingh KC told TNN. "The Maoists have been relentlessly attacking us and other parties, calling us stooges of foreign powers. But the tape shows who the real puppets are. The conversation in the tape poses a grave concern for Nepal's independence and sovereignty. The Maoists have denied the tape but we are asking the government to hold a voice test and let the public know what the actuality is."

KC also made an oblique reference to the current anti-India hysteria being whipped up by the Maoists. "We are concerned at the attempt to jeopardise our relations with our neighbours," he said.

"unknown Chinese official "even he or she may not be Chinese, who knows?
After all it will be fruitless for China to support Prachanda or the cadres of Nepali maoists.
