ISLAMABAD: The Chinese government has acceded to Pakistan’s request to take over the operations at Gawadar Port as soon as the terms of agreement with the incumbent Singapore Port Authority expire.

This was stated by Federal Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar after completing his visit to China, said a press release.

China is an all-weather friend and the closest ally of Pakistan, and this can be judged from the fact that whichever sectors Pakistan requested assistance during the PM’s recent visit to China, they immediately agreed with Pakistan, he said.

Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar said during their meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, raised and discussed some important strategic and economic issues.

He said, “Pakistan considers that peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan and the whole region. Pakistan supports a stable government in Kabul which shall be Afghan owned”.

He said Pakistan requested frigates of 4,400 tons on credit basis and also asked the Chinese government to train Pakistani personnel on submarines.

The minister further stated, “We are grateful to the Chinese government for constructing Gwader Port. However, we will be more grateful to the Chinese government if a naval base is being constructed at the site of Gwader for Pakistan”.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told his Chinese counterpart that their programme of JF-17 Thunder aircraft was going on successfully, but it would be a pleasure “for us if the Peoples Liberation Army will induct the aircraft in their air fleet. This will give a lot of publicity to our aircraft and we will be able to sell a larger quantity of the aircraft to bring down the cost. The Chinese government subscribed to our request to equip our Air Force with FC-20 Aircraft”.

The Chinese premier was pleased to discuss that his government would help us in repairing Attaabad Lake and KKH, once the clarification regarding these projects are received by the Chinese government, he added.

He said, “We agreed on the point that stability had to be achieved in the region by the joint efforts of both Pakistan and China and by defeating the terrorists in the region.

“At this point Pakistan asked China that a message may be conveyed to the US government that Pakistan’s sovereignty should be respected. The Chinese government assured that they would help us to remove all the bottlenecks coming in the way of our prosperity”.

Pakistan should stop the deal with Singapore Port Authority and sign a contract with China. There is no other country on earth that shares the same interests with Pakistan as China does. China has more experience with making sea ports successful. China can have its oil route through Gwadar, Pakistan then will be making lots and lots of money when this Port becomes busy transporting oil and other resources from the Middle East and other regions for the largest populated country on planet earth.

At the current point of time it seems that many people across the ocean and adjacent to us does not like the Chinese to run the gwadar port and I think they will do whatever it takes to stop this from happening. My question to chinese members here is what they think is China is aware of this situation and if yes than does they have a game plan for this in immediate future.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Singapore Port Authority contract won't run out until 2035. The news that China will be taking over a port in 25 years sounds odd. Anything could happen in a quarter of a century. By that time, Pakistan will likely become a great country and run everything themselves, and why would they need China to run their port? It smacks of a political move than a real attempt energize Pakistan's economy.

Gwadar goes to China
23,May,2011

The statement issued by Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar saying that the Chinese government has accepted a request from Pakistan to take over the operational control of Gwadar Port and also build a naval base is a first indication of the fruitful outcome of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s visit to Beijing last week. China has also agreed to supply FC-20 aircraft to Pakistan Air Force. It would be a safe assumption that China acceded to every reasonable request initiated by Pakistan, living up to its claim that it would do everything to ensure the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of its friendly neighbour, particularly after the CIA-led ‘Kill Osama Operation’ deep inside Abbottabad. The government should be lauded for starting to explore all available options to strengthen its defences against any future aggression or intervention like the one on May 2.

There should be no doubt that once the operational control is handed over to China after the termination of agreement with a Singaporean firm, Gwadar would transform into a gigantic project and downstream industry would emerge, providing jobs to the local population and, thus, changing their living standards.

It would be no wonder that the news of handing over Gwadar to China must have fallen on the Pentagon and New Delhi like a ton of bricks and soon one would see fiery statements coming from them. At the same time, the federal government should be advised to ignore such reactions and keep the national interest supreme. We have done so much for the Americans against our national interest and yet have been rewarded with calls to do more, even conducting unilateral raids on Pakistani territory. Their reactions should not change the course of things that are in our interest. As Musharraf said but hardly put into effect in his policies, ‘under all circumstances our goal should be Pakistan first

I don't know why Singapore dropped the ball on this project. Singapore is one of the most successful port cities on Earth.

Naval chief wants Gwadar deal cancelled

“The agreement is one-sided and a lot of incentives have been given to the Port of Singapore Authority,” Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Basheer said while talking to reporters after presiding over a book launching ceremony at the Bahria University. - File Photo.

ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Basheer said here on Thursday that the Gwadar Port was not serving the purpose for which it had been build and, therefore, an agreement with the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) for management of facilities and development of infrastructure should be cancelled.

“The agreement is one-sided and a lot of incentives have been given to the PSA,” he said while talking to reporters after presiding over a book launching ceremony at the Bahria University.

He said the government should review the concessionary deal because the PSA had not been able to develop the port up to its potential.

Admiral Basheer said the PSA was to be given 2,500 acres of land under the deal, while the navy was being accused of illegally possessing 500-600 acres of it.

“The (ministry of) ports and shipping should stop finding excuses and levelling allegations and focus its attention on the national asset the potential of which is yet to be exploited.”

Thanks for explaining the situation.
:pakistan::china:

Terminating the contract only costs 7-8 million. It's probably worth it if Gwadar Port can be quickly brought to full operation.
