China to strengthen cooperation with SAARC

China is ready to further strengthen friendly exchanges and practical cooperation with the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation(SAARC) in the spirits of equality, mutual trust and win-win cooperation, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Jiang Yu said here Tuesday.

Jiang made the remarks in response to a question about the assumption of office by new SAARC Secretary-General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed on March 1.

Founded in 1985, SAARC includes Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Saeed is the first woman who has been named to the top position of the organization in the past 25 years. She is from the Maldives, host country of the SAARC Summit slated for Nov. 10-11 this year.

Jiang expressed congratulations on the assumption of office by Saeed.

She said as an important organization of regional cooperation, SAARC has made significant contribution to promoting cooperation among its members and advancing economic and social development in the region.

Jiang said China is sincerely glad to see the achievements that SAARC has made in its development.

She said as the largest neighbor of SAARC members, China places great importance on expanding its friendly relations with SAARC and has always worked on strengthening practical cooperation with the organization in various areas.

Since becoming an observer of SAARC in 2005, China has continuously deepened cooperation with the organization in the areas of economy, trade and culture. So far, China has staged a series of activities, including China-SAARC business forum, exhibition of commodities from South Asian countries and training courses for officials of political parties from South Asian countries. It has also donated 300,000 U.S. dollars to the development fund of SAARC.

"China will continue to work with SAARC to play a constructive role in promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the region," Jiang said.
