China to start patrols along Mekong River with neighboring countries

Joint police patrols along the Mekong River will kick off in mid December to restore security after a deadly attack to Chinese ships in October.

Chinese police will start patrols along the river with Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, said a statement from the Ministry of Public Security here Saturday.

No exact date was given, but the first joint patrol will be carried out before Dec. 15, said the statement, issued after a ministerial meeting of four countries held in Beijing.

Police from the four will work together to restore shipping and guarantee security along the river, the statement said.

Shipping on the Mekong River has been suspended since two cargo ships were attacked on Oct. 5, resulting in the murder of 13 Chinese sailors.

A headquarters for the initiative will be founded in China and there will be a coordination office in each of the other three countries. They will be linked by a round-the-clock communication mechanism, the statement said.

China will assist Laos and Myanmar police in terms of training and equipment, the statement said.

Police departments of the four countries will also set up a coordination team to work out more security measures along the Mekong River, it added.

China launches joint patrols along Mekong River

The Mekong River, known in China as the Lancang River, rises on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and flows through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam before spilling into the South China Sea.
The river plays a crucial economic role throughout the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). It also serves as a major bond of the economic cooperation between China and the GMS nations and one of the key transport passages in the China-ASEAN free trade zone.
The river, however, has witnessed increasingly more smuggling of drugs, weapons and ammunition, and attacks on boats over the past couple of years.
The four countries decided to launch joint police patrols in late October, weeks after two cargo ships were attacked on October 5, resulting in the murder of 13 Chinese sailors.
The headquarters for the initiative was established in Xishuangbanna, while liaison offices were set up in the other three countries Friday to share intelligence and coordinate operations.
China has selected more than 200 officers from the country's border police force to form a special police team for the joint patrols along the Mekong River.
Joint police patrols are expected to help restore shipping services, protect the safety of passengers and vessels, as well as reduce crimes along the river, said Meng Hongwei, China's vice minister of public security, on Friday.
The four nations also sought to further build a long-term mechanism on joint patrol cooperation to crack down on crimes and safeguard social order in the Mekong River region, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement.

Shzzz this is absolute a sour grape trolling, telling world that somebody is having butt hurt!?

btw, watch your own axx, western nightmare is coming close to you, keep laughing on China until one day you got stabbed! I mean say goodbye to the dream of becoming a brother of ASEAN! There are nobody offer a damn care who is vietnam, Malacca straight is belong to Singaporean and the U.S. management, little viets don't have a chance to tough that cake!

Next time think twice before talking, retarded kiddo!

No it's not, Vietnam only got the left over of Mekong after Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, only a small section of mekong, therefore Vietname has no any saying concerning this river and should not allow to join the patrol (look at the map)

Mekong_River_watershed.png
but the 'glorious' vietcon should join anything or everything because clowns always want attentions from others

If China believes it is crucial to do patrols for their national security then we should not be discussing this on the forum, since it is their right to protect their country.

Malacca straight is belong to Singaporean and the U.S. management,

Securing Gwadar in the Persian gulf for consolidating a solid position in the hot waters of the Oil rich straits of hormuz ,Lamu in Kenya plus Chittagong, Marao,Sittwe & Hambantota along with the Malacca straight for securing the shipping lanes & energy corridors is an absolute necessity for China, if this is achieved then no doubt it will be the foundation stone for China to replace the U.S. as i have mentioned it's a must for china. after U.S president Obama's Australian visit it is clear that the U.S has some nefarious designs in the region & can be part of the "containing China strategy" in the making & therefore it is an absolute necessity for China to secure these lanes & ports these shipping lanes & ports have a very significant strategic Geo-political advantage
