China to end coronavirus lockdown three months after outbreak started
Tuesday 24 Mar 2020 6:13 am
China will begin lifting restrictions on movement in most areas of Hubei on Wednesday, ending the region’s coronavirus lockdown.
The province had initially been the epicentre of the Covid-19 pandemic after the virus first broke out in the city of Wuhan in December last year.
Across China, more than 3,100 people have died from Covid-19, while more than 81,500 people tested positive for the virus.
Chinese authorities began imposing quarantine restrictions on some cities in Hubei in early January, before locking down large parts of the country. However, in recent weeks, China has seen a decline in the daily number of new cases of coronavirus. Hubei has had almost no new infections for more than a week.
The government has now confirmed that those who are cleared will be able to leave the province after midnight on Tuesday. All restrictions in the area will then be removed on April 8.
