China testing hypersonic weapon with intercontinental range, says USNORTHCOM commander

China is testing an intercontinental-range hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), according to written testimony submitted to the US Senate Armed Services Committee on 13 February 2020 by US Air Force General Terrence J O’Shaughnessy, commander of US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).

Although Gen O’Shaughnessy did not identify any specific weapon programme – saying only that the weapon “is designed to fly at high speeds and low altitudes, thus “complicating” the US ability to provide “precise warning” – he was likely referring to a weapon different from the DF-17 HGV-carrying ballistic missile that was exhibited at China’s National Day Parade on 1st October 2019 in Beijing.

China is one of the world's leaders in electronic warfare. Second most AWACs in the world all with phase array radar, all new ships also have phased array radar, second biggest IT sector in the world, largest hardware sector in the world.

If you can make an 5 GHz telecom network and you made radars before, you can make an S band radar. You can probably make an X band radar too, the RF elements are (broadly, EEs forgive me) similar.

BTW, ballistic missiles are immune to electronic warfare since they use inertial and stellar guidance. They don't talk to any other systems in flight.

I was not simply referring to external guidance or jamming, that is what every side today can disrupt. EW is much more than jamming. Any electronics is susceptible to something more advanced than an EMP. And EMP is very old technology, what advancements is had now is unknown. You need everything fully protected from electronic warfare, including steering of the missile.

50 years plus in developing electronic warfare is nothing to sneeze at. China is not ready for a war with Washington, until China has the knowledge of downing planes with EW warfare and downing internal and externally guided missiles, and protecting theirs from EW. And everything else Washington has and more... then there a chance of winning a war.

These EW weapons are not to be used against Iraq or Iran, they are being saved for China.

Today guided weapons can use a combination of INS, GPS and radar terrain mapping to achieve extremely high levels of accuracy such as that found in modern cruise missiles.[4]

Inertial guidance is most favored for the initial guidance and reentry vehicles of strategic missiles, because it has no external signal and cannot be jammed.[3] Additionally, the relatively low precision of this guidance method is less of an issue for large nuclear warheads.
