lol, much to learn.. Lyin' ted is a cold war warrior who's still stuck in the past. his epic fail of a presidential bid killed by a one liner is embarrassing. No americans is going to die for taiwan, simply because 95% can't point it on the map.

Well, after Taiwan has had 8 years with President Ma and his Pro-Beijing policies, Taiwan is feeling more than ever to want keep China at a distance. Among many things, this it yet another of many indications that China is doing something wrong to win appeal of other nations. And instead of China thinking of what they are doing wrong, they think they should just be more forceful. This kind of mindset is isolating China.

Taiwan's favorite countries from a new poll has China down low. The US placed higher. Japan placed very high.

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) Singapore is the country that people in Taiwan like most among 12 major countries in Asia and beyond, according to the results of a survey released Monday by the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation.

Some 87.1 percent of the respondents said they liked Singapore best, followed by Japan, which was cited by 83.9 percent of them.

Canada was the third pick, as chosen by 83 percent, ahead of the European Union (78.7 percent), Australia (78.6 percent) and the United States (68.1 percent), foundation chairman You Ying-lung (游盈隆) said.

Rounding out the top 10 countries in the national poll were Saudi Arabia, South Korea, China and Russia, while the Philippines and North Korea were at the bottom, You said.

North Korea was voted by 81.6 percent of Taiwanese as the country they disliked the most, while the Philippines and China were mentioned by 57.3 percent and 47.4 percent of the respondents, respectively.

The survey, conducted March 13-14 among Taiwanese aged 20 and over, collected 1,185 valid samples. It had a confidence level of 95 percent and a margin error of 2.85 percent.

It may be thought on this forum that the US will not defend Taiwan, but that is a false assumption. If you have been paying attention, slowly, but surely, acknowledgement of Taiwan by the US and US-Taiwan military interchange has slowly been on the raise. One of such indications is that for the first time, a US General on active duty will observe Taiwan's large scale exercise "Hanguang 33" this year.
---start---
It became known on March 4th that the US Pacific Command will dispatch a general on active duty to an annual military exercise carried out by the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense with this year's exercise called "Hanguang 33". The news came from relevant sources of the Taiwanese military. It will be the first time that a US general on active duty goes to observe an exercise since the breaking of diplomatic relations between the US and Taiwan in 1979. It's an upgrade to US-Taiwan military interchange.

In December 2016, under the Obama administration, the US signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for year 2017, and in there was a provision for the first time to have high level interchange with Taiwan. This time's dispatch was posted on Taiwan's internet media "Up media" on March 1st.

According to Up Media, The Taiwan military introduced a wargame exercise system that was received from the US. In the following years, the US dispatched field-grade officers as an advisory group led by a retired general. But this time, the advisory group will still not be in uniform as has always been and they will observe the exercise from the highest command post at the Heng Shan Military Command Center.

Furthermore, there are even indications now that Japan will step up for Taiwan's defense in the coming years.
---start---
The Self-Defense Forces will carry out a simulated exercise later this month on the premise that China and Taiwan are engaged in a military clash, a government source said Wednesday.

The Defense Ministry plans to check how SDF personnel should perform new duties allowed under Japan’s security laws in the outbreak of a situation deemed to pose serious threats to Japan’s peace and security.

The SDF will carry out the exercise from Jan. 23 to 27 with the U.S. military participating as an observer, the source said.

The drill will take place based on a scenario that the U.S. military and the SDF jointly deal with Chinese military forces in the event of a clash between China and Taiwan.

The revised security legislation, which took effect last March, expands the SDF’s role in providing logistical support to other nation’s militaries when Japan’s peace and security are deemed threatened regardless of location.

Japan’s old law effectively allowed the SDF to conduct such activities only in an emergency occurring in areas surrounding Japan.

The SDF carried out its first joint exercise with U.S. forces in November to simulate new duties allowed under the security legislation in the event of emergencies that threaten Japan’s peace and security.

The simulated exercise will take place at a time when relations between China and Taiwan have soured since U.S. President-elect Donald Trump talked by telephone with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.

But the upcoming exercise was planned before Trump was elected as the next U.S. president, the source said.

Maybe China will say that it is not fair and that the US and Japan are interfering with Chinese sovereign territory and that Taiwan is really a province of China. But is Taiwan really inherently Chinese? It is kind of strange for a place to be considered inherently Chinese when in fact, the Spanish and Portuguese from the other side of the globe had control over Formosa before any Chinese dynasty had control.

In a sense, Taiwan just has a long history of being controlled by outsiders.
Spain/Portugual --> Ming/Qing --> Imperial Japan --> KMT dictatorship --> Democracy

I would add that China today has even managed to upset the South Koreans because of THAAD to the extent that even the South Koreans dislike China more than Japan.

A very important reason why the US won the cold war against the Soviet Union was because of America's success in maintain healthy and strong alliances. The US isn't perfect. The US has done terrible things. Yet other countries still prefer the US. Germany knew very well that surrender to the US was better than surrender to the Soviet Union. Japan knew the same thing, despite the US dropping nuclear bombs on Japan. China is making the same mistake that the Soviet Union made and is isolating itself by imposing a will on others that no one wants.

P.S. My account on this forum is still young and the forums still won't allow me to post links. So the following image has the addresses of each of the sources above.

Yup and recently as of last year, US flew two unarmed B52 bombers close to chinese territory but notified China hours before the flight. American muscle .

Yeah China got mad about that. Not sure why.

A F-35 sqd here will be the best thing ever happen to Mainland China.

It will only be matter of hours before paid up stooges in Taiwan Airforce share, reveal and potentially fly the jet there
( although I am not too sure, if the Jet can be disabled by American, in case it gets flown to china without authorization)

Some American people love Taiwan so much here.
So prove that please - go there to help defence.

Of course the US also is considerate for PRC interests. But at the same time, considerate for Taiwan's and US's own interests. Stationing US troops in Taiwan might be seen as unwarranted escalation. But I think the US will do it if China keeps on escalating.

A major reason why Tsai's approval rating is low is because the voters picked her for the DPP platform ideals, namely, Taiwan's declared separation from China. Tsai has to be very careful not anger China too much. The voters are disappointed with her "status que" approach towards relations with China, even though it is the smarter way to go. Other reasons are for internal pension related reforms and such that I don't know much about. On the flipside, support for the KMT and support for coming closer to China or reunification with China is very low.

On the Japanese food, well relations can never be perfect, there'll always be an issue.

And one other reason why the US and Japan have interest on Taiwan's well being.

Every single piece of military hardware TW procured from America would be a best celebration gift to China. You aliens simply don't understand mindset of Chinese. I would be happily roll on the ground if America sell nuke to TW. The TW military will be 'merged into PLA smoothly'. We deliver what we promise.

Only 8.1% of the population identify themselves as Chinese last year. I don't think it could have changed much in 1 year.

---start---
The percentage of people identifying themselves as “Taiwanese” has reached a record high, according to a poll released yesterday by the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation.

More than 80 percent of respondents self-identified as Taiwanese, compared with 8.1 percent who identified themselves as Chinese and 7.6 percent who identified as both in the poll, whose wording asked respondents if they viewed themselves as “Taiwanese,” “Chinese” or had “other thoughts.”

When asked to choose between eventual independence and unification with China, more than 51 percent said they favored independence, while 15 percent favored unification and 25 percent favored maintaining the “status quo.”

“The results represent a historic peak for identification as Taiwanese and show that it has decisively replaced identification as Chinese as Taiwan’s mainstream ethnic identification,” foundation chairman You Ying-lung (游盈隆) said, attributing respondents’ relatively high support for independence to the poll’s focus on an eventual future rather than the immediate choice used in many surveys.

Chao Chun-shan (趙春山), a prominent pan-blue academic and professor in the Institute of China Studies at Tamkang University, said the result demonstrated the continued failure of Chinese overtures to halt increasing support for independence.

“China’s strategic objective has not changed, but as Taiwan’s democracy has developed, [Beijing] has come to realize that it has to move from placing its hope in the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) to placing its hope in Taiwanese,” Chao said. “However, the results of eight years of cross-straits exchanges [under former president Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九)] have not exerted the influence necessary to prevent the mainland’s [China’s] fears from being realized as more Taiwanese have come to advocate independence, while fewer favor unification.”
While maintaining dialogue over education and culture, China will likely move to “differentiate” policies benefiting Taiwanese to target people with receptive attitudes, he said, adding that there are already moves to sanction businesspeople who favor independence.

The poll showed that 70 percent of respondents approved of President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) government appointments and handling of major national affairs less than one week after taking office, with 56 percent favoring her Democratic Progress Party (DPP) compared with 21.5 percent favoring the KMT.

Tsai’s approval rating carried over to her inaugural address, with almost 70 percent of respondents approving her refusal to agree to Chinese demands to acknowledge the so-called “1992 consensus.”

The “1992 consensus,” a term former Mainland Affairs Council chairman Su Chi (蘇起) admitted making up in 2000, refers to a tacit understanding between the KMT and the Chinese government that both sides of the Strait acknowledge there is “one China,” with each side having its own interpretation of what “China” means.

While 80 percent said they did not want to see cross-straits relations regress, more than 52 percent said they would blame China — not Tsai — if it cuts off cross-straits negotiations in response to her refusal to acknowledge the “1992 consensus.”

While the DPP’s approval ratings represented a historic high, Tsai’s approval ratings were similar to those Ma had shortly after he took office in 2008 and likely reflected a “honeymoon period,” You said.

Shih Hsin University professor Peng Huai-en (彭懷恩) said that while there appeared to be some shift in the political landscape, the effect was clouded by a “social desirability” bias, which he said often creates a temporary spike in polling numbers for election winners.

“People like to add icing to the cake,” he said. “The KMT is not going to be knocked out any time soon.”

The survey interviewed 1,089 respondents using random digit dialing and had a margin of error of 2.97 percentage points.

Only people as smart as Hillary Clinton trust polls. BTW, Japan is not trusted by BOTH CHINA AND USA, I consider you are very clear about this. What you see and hear not necessarily be truth.

The US has positive views of Japan, many recognizing Japan as an ally.

Here are the countries in order that the US views as an ally the most.
Canada 55%
United Kingdom 55%
Australia 45%
Israel 44%
France 41%
Germany 38%
Italy 34%
Ireland 33%
Japan 33%
South Korea 32%
New Zealand 32%
Norway 30%

Granted 4% view Japan as an enemy an 8% view Japan as unfriendly. So a little better would be nice to see. Regardless, it is much lower than China's 11% enemy and 34% unfriendly. I don't know why it is so hard for patriots of China to self critique themselves a little and urge a change in China's foreign policy..

I would add that that both Secretary of Defense Mattis' first trip abroad was to Japan. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's first trip abroad was also.. to Japan. President Trump's 2nd meeting with a foreign leader was Abe. Understandably, Prime Minister May of the UK got the 1st meeting with Trump.

Here's another one..
