SINGAPORE — The Republic’s biggest water sports festival, the 2016 DBS Marina Regatta, wrapped up two weekends of dragon boat racing at the Marina Bay on Saturday (June 4), with the fifth edition of the event attracting some 20,000 spectators and event goers over four days of sporting action and festivities.

The competition across the different 500m categories on Sunday saw Ley Choon Group Holdings claiming both Premier titles for the Open 22 crew and Women 12 crew, while the Corporate races were won by KPMG Dragon Boat (Corporate Open 12 crew) and DBS Asia Dragons (Women 12 crew).

“It’s so nice to see our hard work pay off,” said Toh Wei Jie, captain of Ley Choon Group Holdings. “We took each qualifying round as a training session and tried out different tactics each time to see what would work best, so we could get consistently better timings and improve set upon set.

“Our rowers worked really hard and now we’re going to celebrate our win with ice cream. We’ve been dieting for this to ensure our boat is as light as it can be, and to treat ourselves today we brought a few tubs of ice cream!”

The tertiary open 22 crew title went to the National University of Singapore (NUS), while the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) claimed victory in the tertiary women 12 crew.

While the International Open 22 crew race saw the Singapore national team emerging tops ahead of NUS and Ley Choon Group Holdings, the national paddlers (2:41.385) were beaten to the International Women 12 crew title by the Indonesia Rowing & Canoeing Association (2:36.986). SIM finished in third spot in 2:42.901.

“We’re feeling great because we did a good set and we were facing very strong national teams like Indonesia and Hong Kong,” said national team captain Jarrett Tan.

“We’ve been training five to seven times a week, and really put in the effort, so we were confident about the race.”

Addedd Shifa Garnika Nurakim, who won gold with the Indonesian team in the International Women event: “We train very hard and we do the best we can, so we’re proud of winning this for Indonesia. While some of us were here for SEA Games last year, half of us are new to Singapore.”

Aside from the dragon boat action at the Bay, the DBS Marina Regatta kept event goers entertained with a wide range of activities such as kayaking, zorbing, stand-up yoga, and stand-up paddling. The pop-up urban beach at The Promontory @ Marina Bay, as well as South-east Asia’s tallest inflatable slide, also proved a hit over the four-day event.

Xinhua, June 12, 2016

An incubation and coaching platform for start-ups from Taiwan was launched on Saturday at a cross-Strait innovation and entrepreneurship base located in Xiamen, east China's Fujian Province.

The platform, known as the Taiwan pavilion, will focus on guiding innovation of small and medium sized enterprises, cross-Strait outsourcing of services and human resource exchanges.

With business ranging from human resource brokerage, e-commerce, to micro-financing, the platform will provide investment facilitation and financing support to young Taiwanese entrepreneurs in the mainland.

The launching ceremony of the Taiwan pavilion was part of a slew of entrepreneurship-themed activities held in Xiamen on Saturday, including forums addressed by young entrepreneurs from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and a business start-up roadshow competition.

A suspected pipe bomb that injured 25 passengers on a train in Taiwan was a homemade explosive device and unlikely to be part of a terror-related plot, a police official said on Friday.

The explosion, decried on television by Premier Lin Chuan as appearing to be a deliberate “act of malice”, happened just before the train entered a station in Taipei, the capital, late on Thursday. Television broadcast images of people with bandages on their burned limbs and faces being taken to hospital.

“Our initial investigation has ruled out terror,” Wang Bao-chang of Taiwan’s National Police Agency told a news conference, adding there had been no claim of responsibility and no information to justify suspicion of a terrorist attack.

Authorities are hunting for more than one suspect, among them a man wearing black clothes and aged around 40, who was glimpsed by witnesses just minutes before the blast, Wang said.

The explosive device was a steel tube 47 cm long filled with pyrotechnic gunpowder, Wang added, as he displayed a picture of remnants of a black tube, with gray duct tape stuck on it, that investigators had found at the site.

It was unclear how the device was set off, he added, but a long red bag used to carry climbing equipment was found in the bathroom of a train car and may have been used to transport the device.

Should they find this guy guilty, they should punish him severely.

(ECNS) -- Taiwan authorities have identified a suspect responsible for an explosion that injured at least 25 passengers on a commuter train in Taipei, local media reported.

Of the injured, the oldest is 55 years old and the youngest 5, with two victims in serious condition, Taipei's firefighting department said Friday.

The explosive appeared to be 15 to 20 centimeters long and looked like a firecracker. It is thought to have caused a blast that engulfed one train car in flames as it was pulling into a station, according to police.

A suspicious man has been identified but further investigation will make it clear whether it was plotted or an accident.

Reports cited witnesses as saying they heard a loud explosion before the train carriage burst into flames. Smoke filled the carriage and terrified passengers started to scream.

There's no surveillance footage from inside the carriage.

While government agencies are investigating the blast, the security level on the island had not been raised to indicate a terrorist attack, and residents were urged to remain calm.

Students across Straits remember Sun Yat-sen
By Chen Boyuan

Dr. Sun Yat-sen, also known as Sun Zhongshan and Sun Wen, led the Xinhai Revolution (1911) to overthrow the last feudalist emperor in China and later founded the Republic of China.

The commemoration was part of a cross-Straits summer camp exchange organized by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), named after Sun's wife, who was the honorary president of the People's Republic of China.

Students from both the mainland and Taiwan noted that the name Sun Yat-sen has long been part of their life. However, Chen Qi from the National Taipei University said that ordinary people would hardly associate places like Zhongshan Road or Zhongshan Park, which are found in many cities, as well as Zhongshan City with Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

However, this familiarity may be where oblivion blossoms. The students all said that they do not really know about Sun Yat-sen's life beyond the knowledge they learned in middle school history class; only several of them whose major was history said they had a chance to dig deeper. Even so, they all believed the nation has in its blood Sun's spirit and his advocacy of democracy and republic.

People from across the Straits are bound by this shared recognition of Sun's spirit and recognition of being Chinese, among other things. The cross-Straits shared pursuit for unity, peace and cooperation seems more necessary these days as Tsai Ing-wen becomes Taiwan's new leader and the arbitration on the South China Sea disrupted the tranquility of China's southernmost territory.

"The two sides of the Straits must realize that only an adherence to peace and cooperation can bring good results. Taiwan cannot have a good future without the mainland and vice versa," said Zheng Zhenqing, an associate professor of Taiwan studies at Tsinghua University.

He said that many differences, including those found among young people, exist between the mainland and Taiwan, but that was quite normal since the two sides across the Straits have followed very different development paths for more than six decades.

The summer camp organized by the CSCLF was a chance for students from both sides to visit each other and find a common ground, share common ideas, common feelings and a common patriotism for China.

These students flew to Taipei on Sunday to start the second leg of their summer camp where they plan to visit the National Dr. SunYat-sen Memorial Hall and the Taipei Palace Museum.

@TaiShang besides overthrowing the Qing government all I read is that he was not living in China at the time. How or what did he do further to contribute to a modern China?

We learned that he was not ambitious to remain the top man in China. In fact, he wanted to return to isolation and books.

His philosophy and vision for modern China and his humble beginning. Is something for all Chinese to learn. Even Chairman Mao will agree that. That is why Sun Yat Sen is honoured in PRC.
