Singapore: Dragon boating by the bay a hit with event goers
SINGAPORE — The Republic’s biggest water sports festival, the 2016 DBS Marina Regatta, wrapped up two weekends of dragon boat racing at the Marina Bay on Saturday (June 4), with the fifth edition of the event attracting some 20,000 spectators and event goers over four days of sporting action and festivities.
The competition across the different 500m categories on Sunday saw Ley Choon Group Holdings claiming both Premier titles for the Open 22 crew and Women 12 crew, while the Corporate races were won by KPMG Dragon Boat (Corporate Open 12 crew) and DBS Asia Dragons (Women 12 crew).
“It’s so nice to see our hard work pay off,” said Toh Wei Jie, captain of Ley Choon Group Holdings. “We took each qualifying round as a training session and tried out different tactics each time to see what would work best, so we could get consistently better timings and improve set upon set.
“Our rowers worked really hard and now we’re going to celebrate our win with ice cream. We’ve been dieting for this to ensure our boat is as light as it can be, and to treat ourselves today we brought a few tubs of ice cream!”
The tertiary open 22 crew title went to the National University of Singapore (NUS), while the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) claimed victory in the tertiary women 12 crew.
While the International Open 22 crew race saw the Singapore national team emerging tops ahead of NUS and Ley Choon Group Holdings, the national paddlers (2:41.385) were beaten to the International Women 12 crew title by the Indonesia Rowing & Canoeing Association (2:36.986). SIM finished in third spot in 2:42.901.
“We’re feeling great because we did a good set and we were facing very strong national teams like Indonesia and Hong Kong,” said national team captain Jarrett Tan.
“We’ve been training five to seven times a week, and really put in the effort, so we were confident about the race.”
Addedd Shifa Garnika Nurakim, who won gold with the Indonesian team in the International Women event: “We train very hard and we do the best we can, so we’re proud of winning this for Indonesia. While some of us were here for SEA Games last year, half of us are new to Singapore.”
Aside from the dragon boat action at the Bay, the DBS Marina Regatta kept event goers entertained with a wide range of activities such as kayaking, zorbing, stand-up yoga, and stand-up paddling. The pop-up urban beach at The Promontory @ Marina Bay, as well as South-east Asia’s tallest inflatable slide, also proved a hit over the four-day event.
