China & Switzerland vow to enhance military cooperation

China and Switzerland on Thursday pledged to enhance military cooperation.

Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie expressed confidence in further developing diplomatic ties between the two countries, when meeting with visiting Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Andre Blattmann.

Switzerland was one of the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, said Liang.

Bilateral ties had maintained a sound momentum of development, with fruitful cooperation in economy and trade, culture, as well as science and technology, he said.

Recent years had also seen a constant growth of China-Switzerland military ties, with frequent high-level visits, regular exchanges and sound cooperation, Liang said.

The Chinese armed forces attached importance to maintaining long-term and stable friendship and cooperation with their Swiss counterparts, and wanted to work with them to promote exchanges and cooperation, Liang said.

Blattmann hailed the smooth development of Switzerland-China relations and the close cooperation between their armed forces.

He hoped relations between the two nations and their military ties could be consolidated and advanced through his first visit to China.

Switzerland and China were also expected to strengthen military exchanges and cooperation in personnel training as well as emergency rescue and disaster relief, Blattmann said.
