China has announced that it has successfully launched a domestically-made submarine in the South China Sea, Chinese state media reported today.

CCTV news channel broadcast the above video of submariners on the maiden voyage of the vessel, including the moment a robot planted a Chinese national flag at the bottom of the South China Sea.

The China-made submarine reached depths of more than two miles, according to CCTV.

China has declared that it is the fifth country to produce a submarine that can withstand depths of more than two miles below sea level, after the United States, Russia, France, and Japan.

Speaking at a briefing on Thursday, Ma Yanhe, head of social development at the Ministry of Technology said the test was successfully carried out.

"The submarine made a record of operating under sea for 9 hours and 3 minutes, so the the equipment on board successfully passed the test and operated at depths of more than 3,000 metres and met the relevant standards," Ma said.

The date the mission was carried out is not known.

I hope Pakistan will get these JL2 submarine as soon as possible.

guys its not a submarine as in used for war......
it is a submersible for research purposes

ofcourse its a great feat and good going china!!!!!

First know the details abt the equipment, ur requirements and its price and then ask for it. Donot know why few fanboys always ask for everything which is developed in neighbourhood ,If its a new missile or new helicopter or submarine whatever and whom so ever is developing, may be its Turkey or China.

This new submersible is about as nonmilitary as you can get...

Unless you consider the possibility of pinching someone to death with those tiny robotic arms.

Didn't even cared to comment or talk about actual topic.. Typical Indian mentality, "don't waste any opportunity to criticize your neighborhood".. :cheesy:

For one simple reason.. because it hurts our neighborhood hehe...

That submarine could equally be used for offensive purposes. If this submarined is sitting that deep in the ocean, I bet it won't be traceable even by latest P-8is Now if some controllable gadget is un-traceable, that always become a potential in its own.

er.... this is pure scitific sub
it takes hours to go that deep
also takes long time to get up to surface
what do u expect this thing to do with military issure?

Less than a dozen vessels are capable of working beyond 1000m depth. Between the Chinese submersible, the Alvin, it's replacement, the Russian MIRs, the French Nautile, and the Japanese Shinkai there are maybe 6 manned submersibles capable of diving deep enough to explore ~90% of Earth's seafloor as the world enters the next decade.

There's a lot of exploring to do...

This should be a standard millitary issue for every pak sailor..we need to revive undersea tourism

Even if it does nothing, just by knowing something deep is looking upwards at them will make them sick. HEHE..

No seriously, if this technology is available to build a submarine for research purpose, it would also be modified or built upon to produce military equipment. OR it can also act as deep sea relocatable sensing and tracking device. It future, this could well be used to launch deep sea missiles.. who knows. Utilization of technology is only matter of choice but the availability of technology is one big leap that has been achieve. :china:
