Saudis Use Chinese-made Cannons in Yemen

$

PLZ-45

Saudi PLZ-45 howitzers have been deployed to the border in preparation of Operation Decisive Storm. Currently firing at Houthi rebel positions like artillery bombing Saudi border posts, the PLZ-45s will advance alongside any Arab intervention force into Yemen.

Reuters

The Saudi Army is deploying its best cannons, the NORINCO PLZ-45 self propelled howitzer (SPH) to bombard Houthi rebels in western Yemen. This is the first time that a modern Chinese SPH has seen combat. While Saudi Arabia has bought primarily American weapons, recent advances in Chinese artillery technology has actually made Chinese artillery more capable in many respects over its American counterparts.

PLZ-45 IN ACTION

The PLZ-45 is the artillery workhorse of the Saudi Army, it can a range of nearly 40km and can fire American and Chinese made smart munitions guided by lasers and satellite navigation, as well as cluster munitions.

Reuters

The PLZ-45 is a 33 ton artillery vehicle, with a 6.97 meter long cannon that fires guided and unguided 50kg 155mm shells up to 39 kilometers away (in contrast, the America M109A7 Paladin's shorter cannon has a 30km maximum range). First developed in the 1980s, the PLZ-45 did not see widespread Chinese service, though its bigger descendant, the 50km ranged PLZ-04, is in widespread PLA service. The PLZ-45 comes with an ammunition supply vehicle that carries 90 shells, as well as sophisticated counterbattery and fire control radars, in addition to forward observation scouts.

KUWAITI GUNS

While Kuwait has chosen to buy western equipment such as the American M1A1 Abrams tank, it has ordered 75 PLZ-45 SPHs from China. The original 1998 purchase of 27 was intended as a political favor for Beijing, but the Kuwaiti was satisfied enough to keep ordering more cannons.

www.fyjs.cn

Currently, over 200 PLZ-45 SPHs have been sold by China's NORINCO weapons manufacturer to Algeria, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Especially noteworthy is that while Saudi Arabia also possesses American made M109A5 and French AMX-GCT SPHs, they have chosen more capable Chinese made artillery to take the lead in Operation Decisive Storm, the Arab intervention into Yemen. However, we should not be too surprised at the use of Chinese land weapons; as the 2014 U.S. Defense Department's China Military Power Report noted that Chinese defense contractors like NORINCO are producing world class weapons systems not just in new areas like drones, but also in traditional technology like armored vehicles.

I read Xi's reelection was due later this year.
:omghaha:
LOL, funniest joke I've ever heard, always cracks me up.
A bunch of people meeting in a closed room and electing themselves back up is not exactly reelection.

Geez, your mother would be so proud of you! grasping English!

You can't say that. China is enough restrained, because China does not want to destroy peace. It's different from the India war mania. Unlike "superpower", "surgical strike", "2.5 line war"....All the low lying in India.

Indian Army ammunition won’t even last 10 days in event of a war, suggests CAG reports

Indian Amry's plan to stock up 50% ammunition by March 2015 remained far from realization with just 10% in stock.

If India were to go to war now, 90 per cent of its available ammunition would not last even for 10 days, inferred the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in a report tabled in Parliament on Friday. It said the ammunition roadmap drawn by the Army in 2012 for building up the stock to 50 per cent by March 2015 and 100 per cent by 2019 has remained far from realisation.

Coming down heavily on the Defence Ministry, the Army, ordnance factories and quality assurance agencies, the report highlighted that while the Army blamed the Ordnance Factories Board (OFB) for delays and slippage, the OFB asked for lesser money from the government than what was required to meet the Army’s projections. Seventeen of the import projects initiated in 2013 have not been concluded so far, the national auditor said.

As reported earlier, the Army had told a Parliamentary panel that the mountain strike corps was being raised by using ammunition from War Wastage Reserve (WWR).

According to the report, however, only 10 per cent of the ammunition is available to meet a 40-day WWR.

Further, 84 per cent of the high caliber ammunition of the country was “critical” — meaning of quantity that could last for just about 10 days.

The report has blamed the shortage on the inability of the Ordnance Factories Board to meet the demand of the Army as well as the delays in imports. It has highlighted that the minimum acceptable risk level (MARL) — which benchmarks a minimum availability of ammunition for 20 days and was set by the Army HQ in 1999 after the Kargil war — has not been achieved even 15 years later.

For the reviewed period of 2009-2013, the types of critical ammunition increased from 15 per cent in March 2009 to 50 per cent in March 2013.

The comprehensive report that examined 69 types of ammunition, the inability of the ordnance factories to meet the projected requirements by the Army was one of the reasons for the depleting ammunition ratios.

For instance, the OFB has been consistently meeting only between 63-72 per cent of the Army’s annual projected ammunition requirements.

The report has blamed the OFB for projecting lesser budgetary requirement from the government than what was needed to meet the targets given by the Army. It also said that close to Rs 94 crore worth of ammunition/components manufactured by the ordnance factories were rejected by the quality testing agencies, thus adding to the shortage.

According to the report, nine cases initiated to procure the ammunition from import/trade were delayed due to single vendor situation, complexities in transfer of technology, finalisation of requirements by the Army HQ and delays in receiving bids.

Interestingly, ammunition worth Rs 3,578 crore was lying in segregated condition even as ammunition worth Rs 2,109 crore was awaiting repairs.

Restrained  You haven't read Global Times or haven't followed 102365412 warnings coming out of China lately I guess. China thought it can bully India with threats and warnings like it does with other small nations. But now you find yourself in a tight spot with India not budging, it makes you look like a fool and pussy.

Just a warning. India doesn't need to be nervous. India can continue to exist. It's not important. My only request was that after the war, Indians would not advertise, "this is a sneak attack."".

Because China has brought out enough evidence and warnings. The whole world knows that China does not want to destroy peace. So when the war broke out... This is a provocation from India.

When I see an agricultural country challenging an industrial nation, forgive me for laughing.:-)

China is clearly escalating the issue now to other border areas. This coming at a time when Chinese vice premiere wang yang is in Pakistan. Laddakh is near to Indian occupied kashmir. Remember what Chinese said when they mentioned about kashmir as disputed territory.

Coincident? Don't think so.
Yes this is a positive development. Pakistan and China should collaborate to free Jammu and Kashmir from indian occupation. Excellent move by China. China should take areas occupied by Indian hegemonists have illegally taken over.

I can hardly imagine India in any place stronger than China. Economy? Military? Industrial? Life expectancy? Literacy rate? HDI? Urbanization?

So please do not misunderstand, in Chinese view, India and small country is not very different. China just doesn't want to destroy peace.

China may not be in any place stronger than US but will China let US encroach in the SCS? In our backyard we rule, if you have any doubt fire the first bullet and you will know.
