China on Monday officially started to construct the country's second large domestically made cruise ship, signaling that the country has grasped core technologies to design and construct large cruise ships, according to a report from news website chinanews.com.cn.

This move also marks a landmark step toward mass production of large cruise ships in China, which is also crucial to upgrading the domestic shipbuilding industry, as well as enhancing the global profile of Chinese manufacturing, the report noted.

According to the chinanews.com.cn report, the ship, which is being constructed by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co under the state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corp, is designed to be 341 meters in height and 37.2 meters in width.

The ship will have a total tonnage of 142,000 tons, be fitted with 2,144 guest rooms, and have a maximal navigation speed of 22.7 knots.

Compared with China's first domestically made large cruise ship, the new iteration has improved both in terms of tonnage, height and number of guest rooms. It is also installed with some devices such as desulfurization tower, making the ship more environmental friendly compared with other models, the report noted.

China's first large cruise ship, cruise ship H1508, is also under construction in Shanghai, with overall construction progress on the vessel passing 60 percent at the end of May and the ship expected to be delivered in the second half of 2023, China News Service on Thursday.

The report also noted that the aforementioned cruise ship has been equipped with a 16-floor living and entertainment area, which includes recreational facilities such as large performance centers, shopping squares, art galleries and a children's center.

So far, about 40 percent of this cruise ship's detailed design has been completed.

According to a report by Shanghai Securities News on July 13, China has finished about 77 percent of constructing its first domestically made large cruise ship. The ship is also being constructed by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co.

Construction Starts On Carnival’s Second Chinese Cruise Ship

Construction starts on the second Carnival Corporation cruise ship in China at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding yard.

Construction has officially started at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. in Shanghai, China, for the second large cruise ship to be constructed entirely in China. The ship is based on the successful Vista-class ships, and will be fully tailored to the emerging Chinese cruise market.

The vessel is being built under the ownership of CSBC Carnival Cruises, a joint venture company established in China in 2018 by China Shipbuilding Group, the world’s largest shipbuilder, and Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise company.

Construction of Second Vista-Class Vessel For Chinese Market Underway

CSBC Carnival Cruises, a joint venture of the China Shipbuilding Group and Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise company, has officially started the construction of the second large cruise ship to be fully built in China.

The ship is being built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., with the company behind the original Vista-class ships, Fincantieri, acting as advisers.

Chen Ranfeng, CEO of CSBC Carnival Cruises, said: “The official start of the second domestic large cruise ship is another important milestone in China’s ambitious journey in large cruise ship construction and a sign of CSBC Carnival Cruises’ confidence in the Chinese cruise market. CSBC Carnival Cruises and Carnival Group will continue to work closely with Waigaoqiao Shipyard, Fincantini Group of Italy and various partners to ensure the successful completion of the domestic mega cruise ship project.”

At 142,000 gross tons, with an overall length of 341 meters, the second Chinese-built cruise ship will be slightly larger than her 135,000 gross tons sistership and the Vista-class cruise ships operational for Carnival Cruise Line and Costa Cruises in Europe and the United States.

The 5,232-passenger cruise ship is the second vessel to be built by the joint partnership. Late last year, CSBC Carnival Cruises celebrated the float-out ceremony for the first ship, which is currently undergoing internal fitting and is due to enter service in 2023. The second vessel will be entering service in 2024.

The development of a cruise market in China is high on the list of all major cruise companies. China is widely seen as one of the markets with the most significant growth potential, and if successful, it could mean a substantial financial boost for Carnival Corporation.

That is why Carnival Corporation is not just aiding in developing new cruise ships. The ultimate aim is to create a program that encompasses full operational capabilities such as marketing and commercial operations, maritime operations, hotel and product management, and new building management.

Yang Guobing, Chairman of CSBC Carnival Cruises, said: “Cruise ships are not only an important carrier of a strong country in science and technology, manufacturing, marine and transportation, but also an important carrier of people’s good life. We will not forget our original intention to build the localization capacity of China’s cruise whole industry chain one step at a time and create a sustainable cruise ecosystem.”

Further focus will be on developing a “Crew Trainee Recruitment Program” that aims to establish a Chinese management and operation staff base.

Breaking Open The Chinese Cruise Market

In the United States, roughly 14 million people sailed onboard a cruise ship in 2017, onboard one of the 100+ cruise ships that homeport each year in the country. In 2017, 3.6 million Chinese people sailed onboard one of the few cruise ships sailing from ports such as Hong Kong and Shanghai.

By 2030, this number is expected to grow to nearly 10 million people cruising. With the demise of Star Cruises and Dream Cruises, the cruise industry has an open track to break open the biggest market in the world.

That is precisely what CSBC Carnival Cruises is aiming for. Besides the two Vista-class vessels, the company also owns Costa Atlantica and Costa Mediterranea and expects many more ships to be built in record time once China re-opens.

And that is the only thing that is holding growth back currently. With lockdowns still part of daily life in many Chinese cities, the question is when the billions of dollars in investments that Carnival, but also Royal Caribbean, are making will be paying off.

China could probably sail cruise ships to South Pacific island nations to build up tourist business there to deepen economic ties.

There is also a large Chinese funded casino in Guam, any indication these Chinese cruise ship companies plan to sail to Guam?

Or are all these ships for foreign cruise ship companies?

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China will accelerate the development of cruise and yacht equipment and the relevant sector to enhance the country's modern service industry and bolster the growth of its marine economy.

China will have an initial equipment and industry system for cruises and yachts by 2025, with significant improvement in the technological level and supply capacity of tools, according to a circular jointly released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other related government organs on Thursday.

China will strengthen its capability to design and build cruises and yachts, the circular stated, adding that efforts should be made to ensure that the first large domestically-made cruise is completed with high standards and delivered on time.

It also called for measures to enhance the industrial foundation of the cruise and yacht equipment industry, while encouraging cruise ports to develop coordinated tourism products with tourist attractions.

China aims to build the coastal resort city of Sanya into an international cruise home port and other coastal cities including Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen into top-notch cruising destinations.

According to the circular, the country will explore waterway tourism resources of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Hainan Free Trade Port, and Yangtze River Economic Belt, among other qualified areas, and tap into their local historical culture, and natural and urban landscapes.

Construction of Carnival China’s First Newbuild is Over 65 Percent Complete

Aug 30, 2022

Currently under construction at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard, Carnival China’s first newbuild is now 66.8 percent complete.

The update was revealed during the 15th China Cruise Shipping Conference (CCS15), which was held earlier this month in Guangzhou.

According to a presentation by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), which runs the shipyard where the 135,000-ton vessel is being built, the project is making significant progress.

Currently known as H1508, the vessel was floated out in December 2021 before having its main engines started for the first time in July 2022.

The 5,000-guest ship is now undergoing interior outfitting before departing on its first set of sea trials in May 2023.

According to the presentation, the vessel’s delivery is presently set for July 2023.

A second cruise ship is also under construction for Carnival China at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard.

The vessel’s overall construction progress, the facility said, is currently at the 7.12 percent mark.

Under the temporary name of H1509, the ship is set to be floated out in September 2024 before being delivered a year later.

The vessel is reportedly larger than the series’ original, with a 17-meter increase in length.

Both ships will be operated by a joint venture between Carnival Corporation and the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

Set to serve the Chinese domestic market, the brand ordered the newbuilds back in 2016. At the time, the construction contract also included an option for four additional vessels.

With a design based on Carnival Cruise Line’s Vista Class, the ships will be tailored to the local market while presenting Chinese and Western style features.

In 2018, the joint venture also revealed plans to acquire two second-hand cruise ships from Costa Cruises.

Currently laid-up in Cyprus, the Costa Atlantica and the Costa Mediterranea were delivered to the new brand, respectively, in 2020 and 2021.

The ship in the original post (H1508) was the 6th Vista class cruise ship for Carnival. It is being built in China for the Chinese market.

The second one mentioned in the post is another Vista class (the 7th) for Carnival for the Chinese market.

So these are indigenous Western cruise ship designs being built in China for Carnival for the Chinese market.

Here is a video of a Carnival Vista class cruiseship.

yeah, mastering from the Masters.

Why US cruise lines don't build ships in US? It's just a start and based on the track record of how quickly Chinese companies can outcompete their rivals and take over the market once they get a foot in, in 10 years Chinese shipbuilder could be the only one left in this sector.

We have...it's just cheaper to have them built in Europe...just as it is now cheaper to build them in China than Europe.

Sort of like why Apple has their assembly lines in China. Apple engineers design products and farms out their construction to the lowest bidder.

For some industries, once you lost, it's very hard to get them back, a large skilled work force take decades to form.

Your "skilled work force" still hasn't figured out on its own how to start an indigenous cruiseship company, successfully build a consumer level mega-cruiseship, and have a populace standing on the deck proud of its own great achievements.

Instead China, as usual, has to look to the West as a guiding master and be reliant on them to get you going...something the West never has had to do.

Now the Chinese populace will stand on the deck of a Western cruiseship company's ship admiring how the Westerners had taken vacationing to an unfathomable level with their ship designs and glad to see the Chinese now finally have some of it...after the West has had it for probably 100 years.

Lol, until you lost the capability to make anything and developed strong dependence on China, now is the west much more depends on us, not the other way around.

It’s only about cost. If it wasn’t there wouldn’t be a reason to build the 6th and 7th Vista class cruise ship in China. It’s not like the current ship makers suddenly forgot how to make them after delivering one in 2019.

The real question is why is China (known for its shipbuilding) building its very first and second large cruise ship for a Western company instead of a Chinese one? Why not a completely new indigenous state of the art design leveraging the combined knowledge of China’s great shipbuilding engineers and proudly handed to a Chinese cruiseship company to show the world their prowess?

The answer is because they don’t have the know-how to do it on their own first. They are excellent at building things from a detailed plan but hesitant to design anything from a clean slate. They need the Western Masters to hold their hand first and show them how to build one of their designs so they can then leverage that Western knowledge later as a basis to build one themselves without going through 100 years of trial&error.

…and a few years from now you will be proudly beating your chest because when they do hand a cruiseship to a Chinese company that looks suspiciously like a Vista ship (but maybe 1 deck taller and doors that swing out instead of in) you’ll be singing how China “indigenously” figured it all out. :rolleyes1:

Isn't it so simple to say, because China's rise is too fast and actually he hasn't broken into large cruiseship building for long, but once she does, it won't take long for her to dominate the market, 10 years ago Chinese phones are unheard of, now there are everywhere, it took less than 10 years to pull this off. but US once lost this sector of shipbuilding for a decade, it would be gone forever. Now Germans seem to take the same path after several major shipyards went bankrupt.
