Sri Lanka: What on earth is going on with a country which had just only got out of civil war few years ago?

Sri Lanka Continues its Rise up in Global Competitiveness Rankings

Releasing the Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) for 2011-2012, World Economic Forum (WEF) yesterday said that Sri Lanka has made an impressive jump of 10 places in the rankings to 52nd place from the 62nd in the previous year. In the 2009-2010, Sri Lanka was ranked 79th position.

“It was noteworthy that the WEF economists speaking to all the partner institutes specifically mentioned Sri Lanka as having performed strongly in rising up the rankings, and are among the top risers in the Asian region,” the IPS said.

On the eve of the global release of the report (September 6), the IPS had spoken directly with an official at the WEF to get Sri Lanka-specific perspectives on the latest report.

During the international audio-conference, Thierry Geiger, Associate Director of the WEF’s Centre for Global Competitiveness and Performance told the IPS that Sri Lanka has made a remarkable performance as when looked across all indicators, Sri Lanka shows improvements on 80% of them - 80-90 of the 110 indicators - both in terms of scores as well as rank.

“Last year was a big jump. But you need to be cautious of ranks. So many countries are ranked so close to each other. It’s important to focus on the scores. In the last GCR, Sri Lanka improved its score by 0.24 points which we consider a big jump. This year the score improvement was not as big as last year, but there is consistency” Geiger was quoted saying.

Sri Lanka made the greatest improvements in scores, year-on-year, in the pillars of ‘macroeconomic stability’ (up by 0.48 points) and ‘infrastructure’ (up by 0.33 points).

I'm optimistic about Vietnam. Vietnam just passed 1000 USD/capita, so it is almost inevitable that Vietnam's economy will at least triple - its a common trend for 1000 USD/capita to jump to 3000 USD/capita within 7 years.

Vietnam doesn't need to worry about the middle income trap yet because it is still a transition economy between low income and middle income.

Allow China to join the ASEAN as a full member (since our territory is more south, and more east, of many ASEAN member states) and then we'll talk about ASEAN =)

Sorry we have to use our own workers because Vietnam does not have the skilled workers we need.

We're running an aluminum extractor and smelter. This isn't rice farming. This is high tech operations. The Vietnamese workers have no idea how to properly use the equipment and training them will take too long, so we bring a few hundred trained technicians into Vietnam.

On the other hand, Vietnam is supplying southern China with over 100 thousand unskilled illegal immigrants. If you kick out our 100, then we kick out your 100 thousand, deal?
