General Ma Xiaotian, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), who has arrived here together with a seven-member military delegation on a goodwill visit, called on the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Tuesday morning at the Army Headquarters.

A Guard of Honour, accorded by Sri Lanka Armoured Corps troops of the Sri Lanka Army on arrival at the Ministry of Defence grounds, greeted the visiting Chinese General to the Army Headquarters complex, in accordance with ceremonial military formalities.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army after warmly receiving the visiting General Ma Xiaotian, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), had a cordial exchange of views on a wide range of matters of interest, covering core training modules that could be shared with the Sri Lanka Army.

Assuming greater sentimental significance to the meet, the Sri Lanka Army Chief brought back lots of good memories from his days in the Chinese National Defence University (NDU) where General Ma Xiaotian was the Commandant at that period of time.

The visiting Chinese military leader, keen on receiving clarifications and some specific details on the conduct of humanitarian operations in the recent past, made a couple of relevant inquiries with a view to grasping issues in broader perspective.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya spoke high of the Chinese Army’s unfailing support, being extended uninterruptedly to the Sri Lanka Army by way of accommodating more and more Army personnel in different PLA’s training institutes in China. He also did not mince words to recall with gratitude the quantum of military assistance, provided to the country by the PLA as terrorism was at its peak, undermining Sri Lanka’s territorial integrity. The Commander reminded the visiting top rank senior officer of how the Nation as the war was on, looked at the true friends of Sri Lanka with a deep sense of pride and appreciation.

The visiting Chinese General of the PLA, going down the memory lane refreshed historical ties that existed between both countries in the past as well as continuing bolstering of sound bonds of bilateral understanding, cooperation and relations at many different levels, with special focus on generosity, being lent to Sri Lanka’s infrastructure development.

Towards the end of the friendly but formal meeting at the Commander’s office, an exchange of mementos occurred as tokens of memory of their meeting and PLA General’s visit to the Army Headquarters in Sri Lanka. The visiting General before he bade farewell to the Commander of the Army placed his signature in the VIP book at the Commander’s Secretariat as one more formality, associated with his visit.
