China sparks EU panic: Now Xi threatens to tighten grip on key supplies to Europe

Thats not true at all. And if China were to stop importing from the EU, maybe EU would stop importing from China too.

And the list goes on..
All these items are replaceable by Chinese suppliers. Maybe some Chinese products are not as good as EU's in quality. But they are replaceable. Chinese goods are also replaceable for EU. But the prices of made-in-China are not replaceable.

China exploits the open research communities in Europe, practically stealing knowhow. Its a problem, and it may lead to the exclusion of chineese researchers in the future, especially research concerning hightech critical infrastructure.
In my line of work, technical equipment shippet around the world is never going through China. They simply copy anything passing through.

So yes, China does need the outside world.
You can also claim your mom is an alien, nobody cares. But the only obvious truth is europe is lagging behind China and US in all cutting edge technology like AI ,quantumn computing sectors. You have no IT companies like those giant IT commercial companies (tiktok, tencent, alibaba, amazon and etc) in china and US. Your economy is such an underperformer even compared to USA, no need to mention China for decades.
You can try to stop us if you think we steal your technology, otherwise you will still be a loser anyway even if your mom is really an alien as you may have claimed.

China sparks EU panic: Now Xi threatens to tighten grip on key supplies to Europe

EUROPE has been scrambling to secure its supply of critical minerals as China threatens to create a fresh crisis.

In an effort to end the EU’s reliance on Russian fossil fuels, the bloc is rapidly moving towards renewable energy. However, renewable energy projects require rare metals and minerals like lithium, which Europe will have to import from foreign countries, the most notable of which is China. This time Europe is keen to ensure that it is not completely dependent on foreign countries for their supplies, as fears grow that Chinese Premier Xi Jinping could squeeze the supply of such minerals in a bid to apply political pressure on Europe.

This tactic was the one adopted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who squeezed the supply of natural gas and has been using its position as Europe’s largest supplier as leverage while Russia invades Ukraine.

According to a report by the EU Commission, China produces 98-99 percent of all the "rare Earth elements" in the world.

These are a collection of 17 rare metallic elements that are used in heavy industry and high-tech uses, especially in the developed world.

EU leaders are currently meeting to discuss the continent’s strategic autonomy in the raw minerals sector, which means that instead of relying on just one country, like China, the EU will diversify its imports from a range of countries.

Speaking at the Raw Materials summit on Wednesday, European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton said: “The goal is to make sure that our strategic dependency is diminished because considering our digital, green and resilient transformation without secure access to raw materials is simply not possible.”

Mr Breton added that in order to decrease the EU dependency on third states, the bloc has announced the Raw Materials Act – to “intensify the work on the supply of critical minerals.”

When China locked down its borders to Covid-19, supply chains around the world were greatly affected, as China dominated large sectors in various industries.

For example, Europe’s aluminium manufacturing industry was disrupted when China, which provides the continent with 93 percent of its magnesium supply, scaled back production.

Magnesium is a critical metal used in the manufacturing of aluminium.

Bernd Schäfer, CEO of EIT Raw Materials said: “It is simply unhealthy if you have certain raw materials segments with more than 80 or 90 percent dependency on one country.”

Given China’s dominance in the supply of such minerals, Jason Kaplan, the founder and Director of Commodities Analysis and Insight Ltd, has previously told Express.co.uk: “Basically, a lot of our industries will somewhat grind to a halt if flows from China stops its supply”.

According to the EU Commission report, these raw materials are crucial for developing clean technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles.

Mr Kaplan continued: “China is so dominant in some specific minerals that would be very easy for it to exert political pressure by cutting off countries.
“This is a really big worry for the EU, US and UK.

“If China wants to be pugnacious and do something that will generate and kind of conflict, and they cut off access to these minerals.”

The world is a peaceful place if everyone plays by the rule. Of course if a nuclear armed Russia runs amok then everyone in Europe is concerned. The same if chinese run amok then every man, every women, every baby in Europe, Asia are scared.
Beijingwalker you should do yoga that will ease pains and aggression.

As I said, Chinas progress is based on disregarding intellectual property and industrial espionage. You are basically standing on the shoulders of the west claiming greatness.

.
You use the US invasion of Sudan to justify the Russian invasion of Ukraine? What’s next? You use the invasion of Vietnam to justify the chinese invasion of Indonesia? What logic is that.
I m talking about wars and conflicts in general, where did I mention Ukraine?

.
Some of our Chinese members have mental brakdown because Russian military, especially it's equipment, is struggling in Ukraine and most PLA frontline AFV's (all tanks expect Type-15) are based on same faulty designs. China also has economic and social issues what add on anxiety and that turns into hostility towards foreigners who'm they see standing in front of "Chinese century" even thought most problems are their own making.

Example: I've seen Chinese ultra-nationalist claiming that poor quality construction in China is a conspiracy by western powers even thought it's actually happening due greed of local builders.
Lol.. your reply certainly comfirm the fear of EU against China.

EU is just like ESA. Completely lack behind CNSA on all front.

Another sourgraped loser. Like claim 5G Is stolen from western. No wonder Chinese is beating you all corners :enjoy:

Lets just agree that China and EU are huge trading partners.

China overtakes the US in terms of research quality, finds study

Taking the lead While China has already overtaken the US in terms of the quantity of scientific research, a new study suggests it has caught up in terms of quality too. (Courtesy: iStock/RyanKing999)

The quality of China’s scientific research output exceeded that of the US in 2019. That is according to a new analysis by researchers in the US, which also found that China had already overtaken the European Union in terms of research quality by 2015.

China’s total research output has grown rapidly in recent years, but there has been a widespread belief that the “quality” – judged by the number of citations papers receive – is not as high as other countries. A common measure of a nation’s research quality is the percentage of its papers appearing in the top 1% of the most-cited papers globally. Since citation practices vary widely across disciplines, researchers typically weight the citation data of papers according to their fields, before comparing countries’ scientific output. When comparing field-weighted citation data, the US has a higher percentage of research in the top 1% worldwide than China does.

Although this weighting practice makes sense when comparing papers from different fields, Caroline Wagner of Ohio State University argues that it is not appropriate when comparing the overall research outputs of different countries. Together with Lin Zhang of Wuhan University and Loet Leydesdorff of the University of Amsterdam, Wagner analysed citation data contained in the database Web of Science and used the unweighted data to quantify different countries’ research quality.

They found that 1.67% of papers with Chinese authors were in the top 1% most-cited articles in 2019 compared with 1.62% of papers with US authors.

Wagner believes that China’s rapidly rising scientific impact is due to its large-scale investments in research and development, scientific infrastructure and the mobility of students and scholars. She also points out that government policy has targeted leading areas of research.

“We need to think about scientific capability, not as a race, but as a frontier of knowledge,” Wagner told Physics World. “China is now operating at the frontier, along with several other nations, including the US and a number of European nations, Japan and South Korea.” Wagner is now investigating how the US can exploit new knowledge “no matter where it is developed”.

No point discussing with a blind nationalist.

As lapdogs of USA,European countries surely have a lot of confidence, maybe overconfidence, aren't you?
