China & Singapore to boost law enforcement cooperation
Visiting Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu and Singapore Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday, vowing to boost cooperation in fighting cross-border crimes.
Meng also called on Singapore President S R Nathan and Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Wang Kan Seng to discuss bilateral ties and law enforcement cooperation.
While meeting President Nathan, Meng said that Singapore and China had shared a strong tradition of friendship.
China is willing to work together with Singapore to maintain the momentum in visits of leaders and senior officials and boost cooperation in various fields, including law enforcement, he said.
Nathan said that the bilateral ties have been growing over the 20 years since the two countries established diplomatic ties, and that it is necessary to boost the cooperation between the law enforcement units.
While meeting Wang Kan Seng, Meng said the bilateral relations have been growing smoothly recently, with remarkable achievements in law enforcement cooperation.
Wang said Singapore will continue to boost the cooperation between the police departments of the two countries.
Meng and Shanmugam also vowed to increase visits by senior officials and teams of officers and boost law enforcement cooperation in fields such as the investigation of economic crimes and anti-terrorism.
They also agreed to step up the fight against cross-border crimes within the frameworks of the Interpol and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
They signed some agreements at the meeting, including the MOU on cooperation in fighting cross-border crimes.
Meng arrived in Singapore on Thursday for a three-day visit. He also visited a training center of the Home Affairs Ministry and was briefed on crisis management, IT system and the regulation of the Internet.
