Well, many western countries also thought the warning from China was silly during the Korea war. MacArthur knew how silly it was.
Under the conditions of modern warfare, the quantity itself doesn't matter. The quantity combined with quality matters.
We still have a very very long way to go.
All the navies of the world would destroy the American navy, the American navy would run out of ammo, planes and depth charges.
The American ships would have to deal with thousands of torpedoes and thousands of anti-ship missiles and thousands of SAMs hitting aircraft. And thousands of MANPADs hitting helicopters.
The trouble for the Chinese are the hypersonic cruise/anti-ship missiles which would destroy any and all navies. Except submarines, which is why subs that are capable of hosting anti-ship missiles are the next gen for any navy, not the level of a rail gun. But while getting rail guns, the Chinese should R&D SAM subs too.
A carrier group launches a wave of aircraft, China detects the launch, the subs surface, extend out their radars, and launch supersonic SAM missiles. This would force the attack in, but that would be covered by land SAMs and land anti-ship missiles, and aircraft. And be vulnerable to a naval battle.
The sub battles to protect the precious SAM subs would be one disadvantage. Which is why you would need 5 classes of subs each filling a different role.
