Uighurs are immigrants to Xinjiang. Han have been there for 2000 years since the Han Dynasty, while Uighurs moved in only 1100 years ago. In fact this is a typical case of thieves and robbers moving into the owner's house, then stealing and beating the owner. When the owner fights back then, the thief should not be surprised.
