BEIJING (AP) -- China is sending 416 athletes to the Rio de Janeiro Games, including 35 former Olympic champions, state media reported Monday.

China's contingent includes 160 men and 256 women, who will compete in 210 events across 26 sports, the Xinhua News Agency said.

China's entire delegation - including coaches and other staff - will be its largest ever overseas at 711, Cai Zhenhua, deputy director of the General Administration of Sport, was quoted as saying. Among them will be 29 coaches hired from overseas.

Dressed in their formal uniforms of red jackets for men and yellow for women, members of the delegation were addressed at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing by leading Communist Party official Liu Yunshan, who urged them to display a ''high level of sporting ethics.''

China's youngest competitor is 14-year-old swimmer Ai Yanhan. Beijing 2008 Olympics shooting champion Chen Ying, 39, is the oldest and will be appearing at her fourth Olympics.

China topped the medal table in the 2008 Games and won the second largest number of medals at the 2012 London Olympics, including 38 golds.

China has announced its largest ever Olympic delegation to be sent overseas.

It will send 416 athletes, including 35 Olympic champions, to the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.

160 men's athletes and 256 women will compete, representing China, at the Games starting from August 5.

Among them, 35 are Olympic champions including 27 from London Olympics.

14-year-old swimmer Ai Yanhan, who will compete in the women's freestyle events, is the youngest member of the Chinese contingent, while 38-year-old shooter Chen Ying will be the oldest.

This will be the fourth Olympic trip for the Beijing Olympics shooting champion.

"Every time it's new to me. I have lots of dreams and expectations. That is why we have kept on competing."

China is expecting a haul of gold medals from traditionally strong sports such as table tennis, badminton, gymnastics, weightlifting, shooting and diving.

However, swimming and athletics are attracting just as much attention as China is on the rise in these two sports.

Olympic and world freestyle champion Sun Yang is looking to defend his 1,500m title in Rio, while sharing his limelight is new sensation Ning Zetao who became the first Asian man ever to win the 100m freestyle at the world championships last year.

"I feel I am in good shape now. I've been making final preparations."

China is also hoping to make an impression in track and field events.

Feng Shuyong is head coach of the national athletic team.

"So far, our athletes have been able to rank in the world's top three for events like race-walking, shot put and long jump."

Injuries however, caused several noticeable absences in the roster.

Five-time Olympic gymnastics champion Zou Kai was dropped as he is struggling with recurring injuries, while women's gymnast Yao Jinnan has not recovered from shoulder surgery.

Weighlifter Liao Hui announced his retirement after he suffered a knee injury in training last month.

Chinese sports authorities have made a point of stating their zero tolerance for doping policy.

For CRI, this is Liu Yuanhui.

There will be a lot of filth talked about China once the games start by the Western propaganda mouthpieces.

The propaganda against the Russian Olympic team has already started because of their independent foreign policy in Syria and Ukraine.

The West will make life difficult as possible for China because of the SCS issue.

Be prepared for a wild ride.

Nothing new. I hope China does well in the swimming events as that is traditionally been dominated by westerners. It will shut them up for a bit.

It will be primarily US networks. They have as many athletes on steroids as the Russians but they tend to be caught years after winning rather than on the spot.

This is not going to be a great Olympics due to athletes backing out due to Zika virus concerns. Expect a big Chinese medal count.

The western media is already revving up its anti China and anti Russia campaign. I remember in 2012 when Ye Shiwen won gold the western media was so fast in labelling her a drug cheat with no proof and the drug tests showing her clean.
I got into an argument with a member from Melbourne and he challenges me to a fcuking fist fight in his city.

Again America will be numero uno because of a certain racial group dominating track and field....

Never heard of the Ye Shiwen controversy. Maybe it was made into a bigger deal inside China more than outside China. The only one I remember is the Chinese gymnasts who looked like 8 year olds next to all the women gymnasts from every other country.

Incorrect. Very few athletes have actually backed out due to Zika Virus, and for most sports they will have very protected environments, as in like Table Tennis, Swimming, Diving, which are all indoors.

Mostly it is the Golfers who have withdrawn.

You may not have heard of it, doesn't mean it was less strong.

It was a huge controversy started by none other than US chief Coach! The Western Media was all over the controversy. It was so furious that many western athletes especially non-Americans have to come out to support Ye Shiwen.

I don't think you can categorize everybody the same. A huge section of western media was also very sympathetic to her. Plus many very good athletes from other nations like Australia, and Britain came out in open support of Ye Shiwen.

Here, it is Ian Thorpe in huge defense of Yi Shiwen:

Here, is British Olympic Authority:

Lithuanian Coach rubbishes accusations of American Coach:

Alicia Coutts

Anybody on your swimming team that is equivalent to Katie Ledecky or Michael Phelps?

No. Americans dominate Swimming big time!
