China says it will sanction U.S. firms that sell arms to Taiwan

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said on Friday it will sanction U.S. firms that sell arms to Taiwan, after Washington approved possible sales of $2.2 billion in tanks, missiles and related equipment.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that U.S. arms sales to Taiwan harmed China’s sovereignty and national security.

The United States is the main arms supplier to self-ruled Taiwan, which China deems a wayward province. Beijing has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control.

They neither sell any weapons to china nor use yuan as currency
Not possible

But they use rare earth materials imported from China
They can buy rare earth from any countries that CN export rare earth to like SK, JP, EU etc

Unless CN completely stop export rare earth.

China can introduce legislation that bars re-export, violates could face black listing. The sanctions could act as double edge sword when played by two equal or almost equal opposing sides.

However, like Oil, rare earth have limited leverage as other nations could get in the game of producing and supplying them. If China does carry out the sanctions, they will have short term effect, but will have effect.

No. Rare earth is not like oil. Mining oil doesn't cause serious pollution. Mining rare earth does. China controls rare earth materials refining technologies. Oil technologies are not controlled by one country.

Then the black list will be very long as EU,SK,JP, Aussie, Cad, Mex etc r US's allies and US can force those countries secretly sell rare earth to US.

And Im sure that CN dont wanna make trouble wt all US's allies, specially EU now.

US is EU's primary competitor on the international market. EU would be glad if China sanctions US and increases import from EU.

since Taiwan is Chinese teritory (its a mere province of China) then idealy China should threaten to sink any ship, shoot down any transport airplane that transports weapons to Taiwan, honestly anything less than that is weakness from China, I know that the kind of weapons being sold to Taiwan pose no threat to the PLA but its a matter of sovereignity, what do you think the US would do if Hawai had the same status as Taiwan and China declared that they will transport weapons to Hawai? do you think the US will just make do with sanctions if its sovereignity is being breached! LOL ofcourse not, the US would burn down every Chinese ship that dares transport weapons to Hawai.

if China deals lightly with its sovereignity just because the kind of weapons being sent to the secessionsts in the province of Taiwan dont change the military balance in the Taiwan strait then the bully will only be encouraged by your inaction, not protecting your sovereignity & dignity is not patience or wisdom, its just cowardice plain & simple.

An over hyped concept
Rare Earth's aren't that rare. China produce them at significantly lesser price. that's it
