China says it wants to maintain peace on border ahead of Anthony, Menon visit

BEIJING: China on Tuesday said it was looking forward to the visit of national security advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, and promised to "safeguard peace and tranquility" on the Sino-Indian border as agreed by the prime ministers of the two countries.

Menon will hold talks on the border and other issues in Beijing next Friday and Saturday ahead of the scheduled visit of defense minister A K Anthony a week later. He will be joined by the Chinese state councilor Yang Jiechi in the 16th round of boundary negotiations at the level of special representatives.

"The two countries have made long term efforts for early settlement of the boundary issue. Positive progress has already been made in previous rounds of the meeting," Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

She added, "The two sides have maintained effective communication on the boundary issue, and border areas between the two countries are generally stable and peaceful."

The forthcoming visits by Menon and Anthony are meant to give substance to plans worked out between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese premier Li Keqiang at their recent meeting in New Delhi, sources said.
