The first multi-functional icing wind tunnel (IWT) designed by China on its own began to be constructed on May 10 at the new Scientific Research and Experiment Area of the China Aerodynamics Research & Development Center (CARDC). Chang Wanquan, member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and director of the General Armaments Department (GAD) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), attended the construction start-up ceremony.

The multi-functional IWT is a key project of the national science and technology infrastructure program, and will be used to study and solve such problems as icing and noise of the aircraft in flight. When the construction of the IWT is completed, China will be able to have its first experiment platform for developing advanced aerospace vehicle and further improve its aerodynamics test and study level, so as to offer powerful support to China’s development of such key projects as the new generation of large passenger aircraft.

The start-up of the building of the multi-functional IWT also symbolizes that the new Scientific Research and Experiment Area of the CARDC has entered the substantial construction stage. The Area will help to boost the sustainable development of China’s aerodynamics and play a positive role in promoting the national economy and national defense building of China.

Chi Wanchun and Zhu Fazhong, respectively political commissar and deputy director of the GAD, heads of relevant state and military units, and leaders of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government were also present at the construction start-up ceremony.
