According to a statement on the Chinese Ministry of Defence website, the drills took place over the Bashi Canal, which is between a Taiwanese island and a Philippines island. The release of the pictures of the warplanes suggests the exercise was a test of China’s long-range bombing capabilities. The BBC reports that U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Harry Harris said in a speech in Australia that China was creating artificial landmasses in the disputed region on which to place equipment or facilities which could be for military use. Colonel Shen added that the training is in line with “relevant international laws and practices” and “is not aimed at any country or target and poses no threat to any country or region”. According to The Diplomat - an Asia-Pacific news website - the exercise was “a step in realising a robust expeditionary capability.”

The exercise comes amid China’s ongoing land dispute in the South China Sea with a number of its neighbours including the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan. China was accused yesterday by a top U.S. Commander of building a “great wall of sand”.

The BBC reports that U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Harry Harris said in a speech in Australia that China was creating artificial landmasses in the disputed region on which to place equipment or facilities which could be for military use.

Pure proprietary bombers are out of fashion. They are of little use in today's environment. Multi role platforms are more cost effective and flexible where deployment is concerned. I wonder why the Chinese are going back in time?

These weapons can be used as missile trucks, meaning that the aircraft carries weapons with enough range such that it need not to penetrate enemy airspace or be exposed to enemy air defenses; it is a delivery system for standoff weaponry.

Precisely, it just need to be fast, long legged, great payload and stealthy will do.

Bombers can be used to support troops on the ground as well as attacking enemy infrastructure!!
If it was an outdated concept US and Russian would have shelved plans for new bombers!
Just my 2 cents!!:-)

Chines defense developments are phenomenal from anti satellite missiles, DF series missiles, j20 j31 5th gen jets, HQ series Sams, laser beam weapons, drones, Awacs and hypersonic vehicles etc

What ever little indian says its biggest aches for even pentagon superimposed by bumming economy not like indian shadow econemy along with billions of ultra poor population.

On topic:For a long range strategic bombing platform would be suitable if it is stealth like B2

1970 era soviet technology like chinese fighters and submarines.

By that token all aircraft would be considered 1903 technology since they were all based on the concept developed by the Wright brothers.
