China apparently removed surface-to-air missile systems from the contested islands in the South China Sea, new satellite images show.

The initial move to place the weapons on the island, first reported by Fox news, angered U.S. officials who immediately disinvited China from the Rim of the Pacific Exercises.

Satellite images taken on May 20 showed two new launchers on the northern shore of the disputed island, next to a radar system, all covered by a camouflage net.

But recent images taken on Sunday by ImageSat International show that the HQ-9 systems and the camouflage nets have been removed.

It is unclear if this is a drill, or a reaction to the U.S. efforts to stop the Chinese militarization of the Island.

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said the Trump administration's recent decision to disinvite China from a multinational naval exercise this summer was an "initial response" to Beijing's island activity. Mattis called the U.S. action a "relatively small consequence.” He said China could face more severe punishment in the future.

"Despite China's claims to the contrary, the placement of these weapons systems is tied directly to military use for the purposes of intimidation and coercion," Mattis said during a speech at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue.

The Pentagon said the provocative move by China raised tensions in the region years after China’s president pledged not to militarize the disputed islands.

"We have strong evidence that China has deployed anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems, and electronic jammers to contested features in the Spratly Islands region of the South China Sea," Marine Lt. Col. Christopher Logan, a Pentagon spokesman.

"China's landing of bomber aircraft at Woody Island has also raised tensions."

A Washington think tank, CSIS, said the bomber had landed on Woody Island, the largest of the Paracel Islands in South China Sea that is also claimed by Taiwan and by Vietnam.

Chinese are all talk it seems. But atleast better sense has prevailed as building these artificial islands wad bad enough but putting arms on them was really provocative.

. .
The same can be said about you too. You're all talk behind a screen. What else you got troller?
Seriously ? You build a island to stake claims in areas very far from your mainland and then put heavy arms on them to enforce your claims . Its as bad as the colonisation of the 18th and 19th centuries.Claims based just on military prowess are a old colonial method and china just met more than its match and had to backdown.

Netherlands has colonies far from its shores. Chinese claims in the SCS is close to home unlike a distant colony. Netherlands has no moral superiority in this area. I mean I understand the desire to whitewash its history by externalising it on China but be humble my friend. There is no need to be "salty-as-hell", sweeten up a bit.

The "Netherlands" is officially known as "The Kingdom of the Netherlands" with current overseas territories of:
Not to mention the vast ocean area claimed by America via its overseas territories and its exclusive economic zones.

Chinese apparently only understand the language of cannon sounds. They laugh when forcing Vietnam to stop a drilling. I wonder if they laugh too when now being forced to withdraw the missiles from the islands?

China likes to play around and let others dance to its tunes. After all, it is China's territories. Do not be surprised if next week another news is broken about new weapons systems on China's islands.

In the end, status quo is under China's control. The remaining actors only squawk and whine.

These are like stock price movements, the price dropped but found a new floor price (higher than previous) to bounce off. This is just smokes and mirrors for negotiating the new status quo.

We will see if you can live to your expectations as well as your hubris.

You won’t believe it: I recently increase my portfolio in chinese stocks because I believe in Chinese capitalism. I won’t invest a penny in PLA though (assume the PLA is a listed company).

Haha, thats why I always say that corrupted-coward PLA cant fight without licking azz of daddy US-JP like in 1979
