NEW DELHI: As Chinese ambassador to New Delhi made an unusual remark hinting at renaming the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to allay India’s concerns, the Indian media widely reported the statement prompting the Chinese government to smell an uncalled-for controversy that could arise out it.

Chinese ambassador to New Delhi Luo Zhaohui, while referring to frosty Indo-Pakistan ties, said on Friday that China had no intention to get involved in the sovereignty and territorial disputes between India and Pakistan and that the project was for promoting economic cooperation and connectivity in the region.

“It has no connections to or impact on sovereignty issues. Even we can think about renaming the CPEC. China and India have had successful experience of delinking sovereignty disputes from bilateral relations before,” he said in closed-door address to a think-tank on Friday.

The text of the envoy’s speech had been first posted on the website of the Chinese embassy on Sunday.

The ambassador remarks came in the wake of India’s critical stance on the CPEC as the latter claim that the project violate its sovereignty as it runs through Pakistan’s side of the Kashmir — which India says it’s disputed.

The removal of Chinese’s ambassador’s remarks about renaming the CPEC also implies that it was perhaps not the official version of the China government.

Luo said China is sincere in its intention to cooperate with India on the OBOR as it is “good for both of us.”

Maintaining that China and India could be natural partners in connectivity and the OBOR, the Chinese ambassador said Indian economy was behind China by at least 13 years, suggesting New Delhi should grab economic opportunities offered by Beijing.

“Now the GDP of India is roughly that of China in 2004, some 13 years ago. China leads India by 13 years mainly because we started reform and opening up 13 years earlier,” he said.

However, the eight-word sentence was removed from the embassy website page the same day in the evening. The rest of the 2900 plus words of the speech remained untouched or unedited.

I told you CPEC is not China's project only and why should Pakistan rename anything because India is a jealous lady. Its India who is occupying Pakistan's territory and not the other way around - and China supports Pakistan's position on that.

Thanks to China for clearing this aspect and removing those comments.

A wise decision, its showed Chinese in poor light , showed anxiety too.

The Chinese appear to have a penchant for renaming , possibly in the hope that people will start seeing things differently.

Recently, in ' retaliation' to the Dalai Lama's visit to a part of India , they renamed some places . How did it matter ?

India's concern has nothing to do with name of the Project.

So what were the Indians thinking? Where they of the view that it can now be renamed "China and another country economic corridor" ??? :o:

Or may be why even mention China!

"Country and another country economic corridor"

FYI it was not India who asked for a name change, neither did India show any interest in joining a road-project. It was China which is courting India and obviously Pakistan has the right to protest as a beneficiary of the project.

China fears that the game he wants to play via CPEC may be sabotage through this statement so the statement is removed. Pakistan has to play its card very wisely rather negatively and emotionally.

India should not be blamed and is utterly chinese decision. India never asked for name changed and in fact not interested. We should be realistic.

Whenever Its called China or Pakistan I dont know why Indians instantly start feeling a bad Itch in their A**H**e.

China expunges statement about renaming CPEC

ISLAMABAD: The Chinese Embassy in India has expunged words from the official transcript of speech the envoy gave at a think-tank suggesting that Beijing could rename the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to which New Dehli has reservations.

Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui on Monday had said his country was ready to change the name of the CPEC.

However, the transcript released on the website of the embassy did not have the statement possibly due to concerns raised by Pakistan.

Addressing a session at the United Service Institution of India in New Delhi Luo, while denying China's involvement in the sovereignty and territorial disputes between India and Pakistan, said the CPEC was for promoting economic cooperation and connectivity. "It (CPEC) has no connections to or impact on sovereignty issues. Even we can think about renaming the CPEC.

“China and India have had successful experience of delinking sovereignty disputes with bilateral relations before. China is sincere in its intention to cooperate with India on the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, as it is good for both of us," he said.

Citing China's earlier measures to help tackle issues related to Kashmir, Luo said contrary to media reports of aiding Pakistan, China's initiatives focus more on reaping its own benefits rather than supporting the stance of any other nation.

"We always put China first and we deal with problems based on their own merits," he said. Emphasizing the importance of mediation between Pakistan, China and India, Luo said it was essential for collective development and stability of the entire region.
Meanwhile, highly-placed diplomatic sources told The News that Luo Zhaohui’s comments in New Delhi on Monday were sarcastic in a manner. They said China had no plans to change the nomenclature of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) since it was strictly in accordance with the ground realities.

Pakistan and China have named the project after thorough discussion and China wouldn’t budge to the Indian moves against its mega projects, especially the CPEC and ‘One Belt One Road)’ (OBOR) initiative. Interestingly, India has also criticized the OBOR last week while Pakistan has been supporting the concept over-whelmingly.

The Chinese ambassador in India is a seasoned diplomat who earlier had served in Pakistan as China’s ambassador before moving to Washington and he also served as Director General for South Asia in the Chinese Foreign Office.

A combined initiative focusing on enhancing economic cooperation between China and Pakistan, the CPEC is being hailed to create 85,000 jobs for Pakistani youth. It is being facilitated to modernize infrastructure and transport networks in Pakistan through the creation of special economic zones and energy projects.

The initial proposal was made in April 2015 during Chinese President Xi Jinping's official state visit to Pakistan. On April 20, 2015, Pakistan and China signed an agreement to commence work on the USD 46 billion agreement, with approximately $28 billion worth of fast-tracked projects to be developed by the end of 2018.

Good ...appeasing the fundamentalist Hindutva is never a sound policy. They will not stop at anything other than pushing pakistan into the sea.

We live in a neighbourhood where those bordering us are jealous to the the core against pakistan.

Unfrunately China tried to lure India but Indians screw them. A failed policy by Chinese and Pakistan was just a mere spectator.
