24 countries vote in support of the Geneva resolution, 15 countries oppose and 8 countries remain absent.
In the voting for the resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva, 24 countries have voted supporting the resolution and 15 countries have voted against. Eight countries have abstained.
The United States, Austria, Belgium, Benin, Cameroon, Chili, Costa Rica, Chess Republic, Guatemala, Hungaria, India, Italy, Libya, Mauritius, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Spain, Switzerland and Uruguay voted in favour of the American resolution on Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh, China, Congo, Cuba, Ecuador, Indonesia, Kuwait, Maldives, Mauritania, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and Uganda voted against the resolution.
Angola, Botswana, Burkina Paso, Djibouti, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia and Senegal remained absent.
Addressing the UNHRC session today Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the proposal against Sri Lanka has been brought at an improper time. The government is implementing a huge development programme. The Minister pointed out that bringing a proposal against the government is creating a wrong precedent and it can create unfavourable pressure on many countries. He has pointed out that in order to carryout the reforms properly Sri Lanka needs time and space. He has said that exerting unwanted pressure is a hindrance to the reforms work.
The Acting Minister of Mass Media and Information Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has thanked all countries that voted in support of Sri Lanka at the UNHRC session in respect of the resolution on Sri Lanka. The Acting Minister told the SLBC that Sri Lanka’s stance on countries that voted against Sri Lanka will remain without any change. The countries which abstained have done so on the principal stand taken by them. The Minister said that the stance of the government on the resolution submitted by America remains unchanged and the development programmes of the government will be carried out uninterruptedly.
The Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala told the Parliament today that Sri Lanka has not become humiliated in front of the international community. He said that this fact has been proved by Sri Lanka getting 15 votes in its support while America got only 24 votes after a massive operation launched by the them.
The Senior Lecturer of the Political Education Faculty of the Sri Jayawardenapura University Anuruddha Pradeep said that America exerted much pressure internationally to get majority votes in favour of its resolution on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC session. He said that America was able to influence the country’s that receive assistance from it. He further said that to face the future challenges arising from this resolution the government as well as the opposition and the people of this country should work together in unity. The lecturer also said that the task of the opposition is not a minor one and it is important that it should work incorporation with the government.
The Island News Editor Shamindra Ferdinandez told the SLBC that many SAARC and Asian countries voted in support of Sri Lanka at the UNHRC sessions. He said although America got the resolution approved by exerting pressure on its friendly nations majority of the Tamil people are with the government. He said that only a minority is acting against Sri Lanka remaining in the LTTE opinions. He further said that this resolution cannot make much pressure on Sri Lanka. Mr. Ferdinandez said that the reason for this is majority of Tamil people are with the government against the LTTE terrorism.
